Can you guys point me to an article or explain what this is and how blocking oil flow is beneficial?
They point to the bottom of the pistons. They help cool the piston, and aid in oiling of the wrist pin. When you run certain aftermarket rods you have to take them out as they will hit the rod.

Any down side to taking them out? Should I be looking for a specific rod so we don't have to take them out?

I'm pretty sure they did away with those in 2013.
