Still searching for a dealership to sell me an R at a reasonable price  But, once I get it, I'll defintely give you a run down of my thoughts between the two platforms. One thing I know for 100% sure, the R will sound exponetionally better than the GT-R. The stock exhaust note was awful. Loved the car though, it is an amazing machine. I was sad to see her go.

It doesn't bother me when the burger flippers (cheap/easy labor) are in China. At least the engineers, management, designers, etc. are here in the states. That's what really counts. I like to see the grunt work done someplace where wages are low and the more difficult work done by Americans.

For the wheels, Americans can design the tooling, set up the work rules, inspection criteria, etc. - the Chinese can learn to follow instructions.

I remember being told by a local guy that worked at the St. Paul Ford assembly plant that he could choose any job in the place and that he made more than me. Now I don't have a huge ego about being an engineer, but should a guy be paid more to pick up cardboard or push a broom than engineers get paid? Unions.. :tsk:

..and then that inflates the price of the car for all of us.
Not only do unions inflate prices, they inflate the entitlement attutude amongst the workforce... Prices go up, quality goes down. Not ALL unions operate by this modus, but most American one's do.

When I get my Focus RS, I'll let you know if I have to adjust the hood or if I see hair in the paint, and then I'll have an idea as to how German auto unions and production operate.

Sorry guys, can we keep the posts roughly on topic?

I was hoping this was going to become a sticky thread, especially once I get some clearance measurements. It'll help reduce the number of people asking the same question repeatedly.

I like to disassemble things.
The two sizes for the CF wheels are listed on the left.

I just got a gt350 with tech pack and I love it. Just doesn't seem fast enough :). I had a '13 boss 302 that I traded in and I like the difference, but I wanted to be faster...

and your iPhones.... China doesn't necessarily mean crap quality. There's the whole range of craftsmanship there.
It is crap

These wheels are insanely heavy. I'm convinced it is to handicap the GT350 vs the GT350R. Ford could have easily put a lighter wheel on this car for the same amount of money.
The tires probably weigh 25-30 lbs each. But still, wide cast wheel left them a lot of room to make that "18 lb per corner improvement"

In my opinion the reason why ford went with steel brakes was to keep production cost down and maintenance cost down. They went with carbon fiber wheels for less weight and rotating mass and inertia. Also carbon ceramic brakes have less life then carbon fiber wheels. I also think the cast aluminum wheels are too heavy and could have been lighter and better looking. But like many have said its one of the down falls between the GT350 vs GT350R. I would really like to see a pro driver run a GT350 vs GT350R, both with the same wheels and tires. Also courious how both cars would be with carbon fiber wheels and carbon ceramic brakes on each corner.

I agree that CC brakes would've been overkill on cost and maintenance but if you look at the car vs the Z/28, the difference doesn't justify the added expense and the car has almost no fade from the articles.

Plus, the roadability differences between CC and steel are a little different. I would rather have steel for the street.

I don't fully agree, Ford does not care about production costs, since they will just pass that cost onto the buyers. I think they did it for market placement and over-all value, and I am glad they did. The merits of CC brakes are marginal at best it seems, while the cost is astronomical. If they could offer similar/equal performance while severely undercutting the Z28/C7/911 in pricing, then its a win win for everyone. Ford gets the best bang for the buck award, buyers get the most performance for their dollar, only ones who lose out are the magazine racers who like to compare line item to line item features.

You just agreed to what I already said. It's about cost. If they put cc brakes on the shelby the price of the car would of went up. And the gains in performance vs cc and steel were minimal. Not to mention the carbon fiber wheels were a better performance gain in feel, handling, braking, acceleration, it's a win win.

Well, you said production costs, which is largely irrelevant to ford since they will still make profit. Its about consumer costs and final MSRP. Its the same reason they ended up pulling out the MR from the base car and making it part of the option packages, just so they could get the base MSRP under 50k, knowing full well 95% of buyers would be buying at least one of the packages.
