Question for anyone who regularly takes their wheels off...

I'm planning on doing the same for cleaning purposes. The GT rims are in desperate need of a pre winter detail! Any recommendations on tools? I already have a low entry trolley jack but in need of a torque wrench & some axle stands. Don't want to spend loads, under ÂŁ100 preferably.

Cheers

Machine mart was where I got my race jack and axle stands, I got the 3 ton axle stands as they looked of better quality, cost me around ÂŁ20 as they had a offer on at the time

I picked up a torque wrench for less than ÂŁ20 from amazon. and i've got 4x 2 tonne jack stands as well that were about ÂŁ50

Found these (Same brand as my jack stands but 3t not 2t)
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-Ton-Ax...m=283121344035&_trksid=p2045573.c100505.m3226

and then this for a torque wrench: (it's in NM, however 150lbft (stock lug torque) is 203nm)
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ratcheti...738760?hash=item3b1e055e48:g:HuYAAOSwkHJbnTBS

all in all no more than about ÂŁ40 quid

Thanks mate. Although I'm pretty sure I'll be spending more than a tenner on the wrench! Can't be that great for that money...

Is 150lbft still true if spacers are involved? I'm sure I've read somewhere of different numbers for rims on spacers.

Wise. If you are serious (yes, I know you are) get one with a calibration certificate. MachineMart will sort you out.

Certainly as far as the spacers a group of us bought way back in 2015 it was 120lb/ft max for both spacer and wheel to avoid damage to the spacer.

correct for spacers - 120, and 150 without.

@kristian87uk means fuck all the price, they all torque lol. you're taking wheels on and off not doing anything too special. More expensive u get the more accurate u get sure, but we're talking within 1 or 2 nm lol

Made up my mind...couldn't help paying a few ÂŁ extra for the "black series" lol. Matching black axle stands on the way too :)

And...to further fuel my detailing addiction, some nice detailing brushes, Poorboys wheel sealant and a clay bar ordered through Slims Detailing. Gearing up for a major pre winter detail!

Aye, only the wheels, nothing special. Plenty of redundancy what with there being four of them an that... :fingerscrossed::wink:

You would be very surprised.

At work we get a van come around every 6 months to calibrate various items like torque wrenches, they stay about a week to do everything on site.

One of the apprentices bought an extremely cheap wrench (ÂŁ6) off ebay, had it tested and it was almost 18 NM out at 120Nm, (top end of the range on that wrench)

He then went and bought one from Halfords Advanced range, it failed too, (it even came with a certificate) when tested was found to be around 4.5Nm out at 100Nm.

My snap on torque wenches have never drifted or been out of calibration or needed adjusting, they have always been within 0.2nm across the whole range, two are nudging 35 years old now, and cost over ÂŁ150 each even back then.

With any tools, you get what you pay for, there is no possible way that cheap will be better or even equivalent to expensive when it really boils down to it
