I noticed about a couple days into ownership the power steering on my car is rather noisy. Sitting still with the car idling just rocking the wheel slowly back and fourth its very hydraulic sounding with a bit of texture feeling( gear wine sound) coming through the steering wheel.

I have three steering wheel modes, comfort, sport, normal and it does it on all three. Is this rather common for anyone else?

Sounds normal.

When you're at a stop and you turn the wheel, you're putting the maximum load on the power steering motor. It's an electric motor with an internal toothed belt drive that can draw well over 50 Amps of current; you're going to hear it working.

Thank you for the detailed response. I now wonder when upgrading wheel/tire size to a wider footprint (275) in the front if it will cause excessive wear on the motor with non movement turning.

No problem. The Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) gear motor is pretty strong, that's why it draws so much amperage. I honestly don't see a 275 width tire being an issue.

That's one of the drawback with electric power steering that is the gear and the motor is always engaged. It dampens the steering feel.

Interesting you should say that, as it's designed to actually improve steering feel compared with hydraulic power steering.

With Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS), you don't input your steering wheel turning torque to a motor or module; you input it directly to the rack. The input shaft of the rack has torque sensors, which then provide the torque information to the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM), which is mounted directly to the gear itself. Once the PSCM receives this information, it then commands the EPAS to provide the appropriate assist.

The EPAS steering gear design has been adopted by almost all manufacturers due to the ability to fine tune steering feel and provide the most accurate feel.

Of all the things about my GT I still keep forgetting about the electric steering. .It performs so well I just assume its got some kinda rack and pinion lol
