Well take this with a grain of salt since this post is regarding my concerns with my shifter & I have no direct body mounted comparison besides the OEM unit. I've read very good things about the dteeda tri-ax and Barton options also. Can you explain the difference in feel between directly mounting the shifter to the trans, and mounting the shifter to the car?
I'd expect mounting directly to the shifter gives more direct feel, but more NVH.
However, since the issue in my original post has remained unchanged between the OEM & MGW units & gear engament is good, I would note the following experience with the MGW:
1. There is less bind up during gear engagement. This didn't happen all the time but occasionally with the stock unit. I suspect this is likely also remdied with the after market body mounted options & largely due to the soft rubber bushings in the OEM unit.
2. Gears are tighter & closer together. ie. Less travel between 1st & 3rd side to side. This is due to MGWs design & not that it is trans mounted.
3. There is some vibrations transmitted through the shifter handle & it moves as the transmission moves under the car. This is especially the case under load & over uneven road surfaces. I quite enjoy this as it makes the car more lively. But could be seen as a negative.
4. It does transmit some transmission noise. Not unpleasant but a small whine/humming sound at certain low RPM. I'm sure it does this at high RPMs but my borla drones this out
5. Shifts are shorter as advertised.
6. Significantly easier gear engagement into 2nd and 3rd at high RPMs.
7. The MGW unit is very well built & customer service was excellent.
Again take this with a grain of salt based on the nature of this post.. some other members here might be able to better speak to the advantages of transmission mounting the shifter.
