Whats the point of that? Does it make any difference to you financially to spring for the power windows? What exactly are you teaching her? That she should spend even more money sooner to replace a half functional car when you could have gotten her a fully functional car in the first place? Then when she upgraded she could make an even better lifestyle change to a better class of car. Makes no sense. You start her off with nice things and she'll get even nicer things next time. You start her off with ghetto stuff and its just one more step she has to make to live well.
Manual windows are Ghetto? Better class of people are far better than a better class of car

I always plead to the younger set to get a part time job in college, choose your major wisely, don't drink the Kool Aid your professors are dishing out, and always work hard for what you want. Sadly its falling on deaf ears.
While I agree with the majority of what is said here, the part time job while in college is a "it depends" in my opinion. Everyone's situation is different. If the job is of relevance to the field you are studying then absolutely. When a job is completely irrelevant to what you are doing though, I see no point if circumstances allow you to be lucky enough to focus on your study time. Many people are not that fortunate though.

Fact is, if an interviewer wants to hire billy from burger world simply because he thinks unrelated work better prepared him in someway then that doesn't sound like a place I would want to work. I am sure this is frowned upon by most interviewers be it out of wrongfully stereotyping the person for not working (and considering them lazy) or out of jealousy they did not have the opportunity that someone else had.

It has also been in my experience ( 2nd year mechanical engineering major) it depends on the time you have. I have thankfully been able to pull off that part time job at an actual engineering firm. My case is a special case though. I got very lucky being able to get this job and have bosses that understand and accept my schedule for college. Being a mechanical engineering major though doesn't leave much of any free time outside of class and homework for a job. Especially when you have to maintain a 3.0 GPA for the scholarship you have...

That right there. And then they get all pumped up by their professors telling them "stay in school, you'll get a high paying job when you graduate" and then when they graduate they get some low paying job and they're thousands in college loans and they're wondering why they didn't get the job their professors said they were gonna get.
Yeah, I interview a lot of Masters candidates that have zero real world experience with software and they don't meet the requirements for some of my very entry level positions.

On the other hand, the ones that have taken an actual interest in their chosen field and had a couple summer internships have turned out to be stellar employees.

Passion and real experience trump a paper degree and the praise and promises of some professor 98% of the time, in my experience.

Context. Read the post to which I was responding. He used the power windows in his own mind as some kind of wedge issue to purposely give a reduced functionality car.

My first car was a used 96 Saturn that my grandmother gave me, which I got rid of shortly after. My parents then loaned me money for a 03 cavalier where I had to make monthly payments to them until it was paid off. Since then I've done it on my own.

I wouldn't call a V6 Mustang Nice or Expensive. Maybe a NEW car.. What's the price difference between V6 Mustang and V6 Honda Accord? I'm pretty sure V6 Honda Accord costs more after checking some option boxes. There is nothing wrong with buying your children a brand new car. I'd buy them a new car in a heart beat with more safety equipments and airbags standard compared to 10-15 year old cars. My parents bought me a new car when I was a teenager, and it saved my life.

You guys are killing me lol

New Car for a 16yo:
--When I was 16 I got my first car. It was a PLYMOTH NEON, not even a dodge. My dad said that if I could drive this a full year without an accident or tickets I would get something nice when I was 17. My senior year of highschool, my dad bought me my 2007 mustang v6. Even with a 07 my in 2010, there were other kids with 370zs, H3s, Benzes, etc. There is nothing wrong with buying your kid something nice, IF they are a hard worker and are appreciative.

College subject:
I can say that I am for sure the lucky one out of most college grads. I graduated in May, had a couple job offers, and accepted one being a software developer that I started in June at just about 50k/yr. I feel for people that graduate with 40k in debt and start working at a lower-end job. BUT....a degree is a degree. Not only will a degree help you find a good job...but it will also help you with job security.

There will always be those either 1) lucky or 2) hard working that don't have a degree that make more than someone with one. I always told myself during school that a degree won't necessarily help me get a better paying job, but it will help me get a better paying job for less the work. I'm 22 years old.

I sit in my office and work when either some program breaks/needs something added to it. If my degree keeps me from working 12hours in the sun, then i'm fine with that.

house subject:
I dont know anything about that lol -- but I do want to buy a house prolly next year. any suggestions?

to the 18yo kid that makes 6 figures:
For some reason I highly doubt that this is the full truth. BUT if it is the truth, shit man....more power too you! Great job!

Did you go to college? What do you do? How much do you make (if I may ask)

This is what I've noticed a lot of and this is also where I sometimes think I went wrong with the 4 year instead of the trade school. Then I remember the other opportunities I'm open to with my career choice.

May I ask how old you are now and when you dropped out?
I went to community college for three years, dropped out to become a police officer (i was getting bored with college because i wasn't a very good student and wasn't making very much progress) That didn't work out, so i went into the private security industry. I don't make as much as my peers do, but I'm satisfied. I won't say how much i make because it widely varies in my field, but ill just say its enough to pay my small bills and my car and still have money left over to save.

Right now i really don't know what i want to do, so I'm not looking at going back to school just yet. Why go back and force myself to get a degree that i have very little or no interest in?
