The hope is to not have to deal with these things in any new car/truck.
I'd be bent if I got the car back, still un repaired with a notice stating your welcome we aren't charging you for the crappy rental car.
How the manufactures deal with people determines if you buy the brand again.
Took me 12 years, still would never own a Ford diesel again. Ford sold a lot of Dodges and GMs.

its a ford. fix or repair daily. plus they started pumping these things out in late september. i wasn't that surprised when my brake lights weren't working.. (800 miles on the odo) they replaced the BCM (body control module) to fix it. that's what the warranty is for.

car guys like us will have a new car in 3-5 years anyway. it's just a car. we'll have an even better one in a few years.

I have brand loyalty for Ford because they are the only dealership in my area that is not shitty. They always take care of me, except once they pissed me off but came back and made it right. I don't mind having a problem with a car, it happens. It's just if you have to deal with a dealer that hangs you out to dry in the service department. The chevy place here I had to sue twice for engine failure in my Silverado and still bought an s10. They treated me like crap again with that truck after two engine failures I got rid of it at 35k miles and bought an 04 Mustang. Haven't looked back

As for your issue they can fix that... If one on the lot is compared and doesn't make the noise then they can fix it. Ford will pay for the repair if they find something wrong, the dealership is just avoiding your repair because if ford takes the trans back and finds nothing mechanically wrong with it, the dealer has to eat the cost. I would get the regional service manager involved like someone mentioned earlier and get more support from the ford engineers. These "master mechanics" they have are glorified idiots (not all but many) and can build old motors but not these OHC engines and can't diagnose a popping sound coming out of their ass. They wait for a TSB to come out for the repair.

My best friend has a Camaro that's been in the shop four times for the same issue and twice more for two separate issues. He bought his car 4 months before I bought my 2012 Mustang convertible. I have nearly 15k more miles on my car and the only reason it's been in the shop is for a cracked vinyl top, an issue that Ford fixed for free without any resistance. If we're going to do the anecdotal reliability pissing match between Ford and GM, I win in spades.

THIS!
I am loyal to what I like, I am currently driving a 5th gen camaro and will most likely buy the 6th gen mustang because I don't like what I am seeing so far ln the 2016 Camaro

I wanted to buy a Vette but the fact of driving it an hour or more away for service is discouraging. Plus who's to say the chevy dealer in Nashville is worth a damn. I'll stick to my fords for now

I will record it on video when I get the car back... Sounds like two pieces of metal hitting each other... Loud enough that people take notice... Funny how I'm told this is a normal noise and within specs but the other cars they have don't make that noise and neither did this car till now...

Like I said first and last Ford... Sorry. People warned me
I getting that you're angry, I would be too with your issues but saying that it's because it's a FORD is just plain ridiculous. I had a 94 Pontiac Trans Am that I bought new because of its looks and performance. People say "oh GM is now comparable to Japanese cars in quality" my 89 Mustang never gave me any problems but I developed a bad back and the ride was just crap on those cars. The T/A rode so much better. Great car til it hit 36k miles when the door skins literally FELL OFF THE CAR! I had it in the shop several times and they couldn't fix it until finally they used so much glue that the inside of the doors looked like a model I built when I was like seven years old. Glue everywhere, just horrible! Do I say that all GM cars are crap after that experience? NO. But I can assure you that a Camaro will creak and rattle too in the frigid cold like we are experiencing and as for the tranny issue, take it to another dealership and see what they say. You said they had the car for two days, yet they paid for your rental for 5 days .. That dealership may not be a good one. Go somewhere else and see what they say.drive the car with a tech and show them what's going on. I'm sure Ford wil do right by you. My 13 Fusion has been great and my dealership is tops for me , always up on any issues gong around, etc and fixing them. Thankfully I'm lucky so you should go somewhere else

Does it make the same sound when you move the gear selector with the engine OFF? Press the ON button(but don't start the car) and run it through the positions with the engine off and see if you get the same noise. This could help narrow down what exactly is causing the noise.

Secondly, do you garage your car or does it sit outside? If it is sitting outside at night at sub zero temperatures it very well could be "normal". All my automatics if left outside in extreme cold conditions clunk on that first shift. The automatic transmission fluid is basically molasses at those extreme cold temps. My gut instinct is that your problems are stemming from the brutally cold temperatures in your area. Thanks for sharing a little more information. :)

Video identifies a sound but no video showing the motion(s). I would put together a better video if it was me.

Like I said first and last Ford... Sorry. People warned me
I wonder if those people that warned you (likely other GM guys) and being a lifetime GM guy if you regret your purchase because of all the flak you get from them.

You should look into that, maybe apply some topical anti-naysayer treatment?

mine did the exact same sound when going from park to reverse. went away after I had a few miles on the car. Haven't heard it in over a couple months now. I think its because of all the parts in the transmission being new, then just settling in later. As far as the brand bashing, I've had many makes and models in my life including a new Camaro just a couple years ago. I currently own a $45k GMC Acadia and it has been riddled with one minor problem after another since warranty has gone out 3yr/36k. So, in the end the motto holds true "Shit Happens", sometimes it happens to you. Give it a little time like I did and I'm sure it will disappear like mine did.

I do it across many things and not just cars. Ford guy and was raised that way. Never had any issues with the Fords I have owned. Over 20 to be exact. Have only 2 non fords since I started driving at the age of 16. They were both Nissan Maxima's (2008/2011).

I only buy Johnston and Murphy or Cole Haan dress shoes. Only buy LL Bean hunting boots. I only buy Ralph Lauren or Tommy Hilfiger shirts, sweaters, etc. I only wear and buy Asics tennis shoes. All these brands provide exceptional quality each and every time I buy one of their products.
