So here’s the long story, yesterday morning i went to go pick up bagels for work. After getting bagels I notice my tire light went on, filled it up definitely had a nail in the tire. So I leave work to go get the tire plugged, and they noticed my terminal had battery acid. They wanted to replace the terminal so I said go for it, they then wanted to also replace the battery and I said forget it because it’s cheaper at ford. Drive the car to work and as soon as I turn off the car it’s completely dead.

I popped the hood and noticed they cut the terminal because they were going to change the terminal but never ended up doing it. In the afternoon I tried a couple times to jump it and it didn’t work, found another ground and it cut on but the power steering went out. Took the car to ford today and they said the rack needs to be replaced, does that sound right?

The power steering module is very sensitive to grounding and power interruptions. I went through this when my battery went dead.

Once the terminal is fixed, make sure the ground straps connected to the passenger side strut tower are well connected. There are two, one near the fuse box and one further back under the strut tower brace.

If you continue having power steering issues then you’ll need to use forescan to clear the EPAS and BCM codes. These codes do not clear when the battery is disconnected.

If you don’t have forescan then I’d tell the tech at Ford to try clearing codes in those modules before you bother with swapping the rack. I doubt it actually went bad.

Thank you, I just texted my ford service advisor and asked to get another tech to check the car, everyone I’ve spoken to comes to the same conclusion there’s just no way we can wrap our heads around needing a new rack.
