Hey All,
New to the forum and wanted to share my mustang experience. Just a heads up that it’s a lengthy read!

My mustang infatuation began at an early age, back when fox bodies roamed the streets (good ol’ early 90’s) and the first time I saw one in person I was hooked! It was a convertible 5.0 and it sounded absolutely sublime; that deep unmistakable rumble pierced my eardrums like no other car. Ever since then I followed the progression of the car (and many others – I’m a car guy after all) through the years and always dreamed of having my own one day. Well fast forward to 2011, at a time when I was ready to buy my first brand new car I was eyeing the S197’s and wanted one so bad! But unfortunately being fairly fresh out of college and in a financial state that would have made me stretch too far, I couldn’t justify the purchase and instead took the more sensible approach. At the time I had 3 main criteria for a new car:

  1. It absolutely had to be stick (drove an automatic chrysler intrepid prior and it had the absolute worst shift logic – left me mesmerized and annoyed many times)
  2. It had to be rear wheel drive
  3. It had to have a ballsy motor

So my sensible approach landed me a 2011 Ford Ranger FX4 with a 5 speed stick shift. Figured if I couldn’t afford fast just yet I’ll settle for some off-road action instead (obviously up to a point). It turned out to be a good decision as it’s a very fun little truck with a good amount of go. Anyways, as the years went by and my financial state improved I again began flirting with the idea of what my next car/truck purchase was going to be. I went through many different phases, but ultimately veered back to the mustang as teaser info began trickling out back in 2013. Ever since then I’ve followed the S550’s journey from dream to reality and was absolutely astounded by the car.

Arriving to the very recent present day, January 2015 to be exact, I brought my ranger in for an oil change and noticed 3 brand spanking new S550’s sitting at the dealer lot. With my truck in service I took the time to chat with the salespeople inside and asked if it would be possible to test drive an ecoboost mustang? Surely enough within a few minutes I had the keys to a black performance package 6mt ecoboost. Walking up to the car I was absolutely stunned at how sinister the car looked – very low slung, planted and ready to be flogged! This moment was also the first time that I had a chance to sit inside the car and I was very impressed. I started her up and set off on the drive. First thing was first though, I had to get used to the clutch which had a much quicker engagement point vs. my truck but once that was down-packed it was a breeze to drive smoothly. Second thing I noticed was the POWER! Wow this thing had guts; it felt nice and healthy right through the rev-range. I didn’t get a chance to bring her up to redline but I can say that it had a solid dosage of thrust ready to punch you in the kidneys with a mash of the petal, of course many of you already know this ;) and it sounded good doing it as well.

Speaking of that thrust, the highway in gear acceleration was phenomenal! Staying in 5th gear without downshifting and this thing pulled very well. The balance and handling of the car were also on point and left me very satisfied, having that nice point-and-shoot eagerness made for a very enjoyable drive. All in all I was shocked at how good the ecoboost car was as a whole. It’s a very integrated and fun package that delivers the goods!! So as I arrive back to the dealer, the saleswoman who was with me on this most magnificent test drive asked if I’d like to drive the GT??

I paused for a moment and with the biggest grin on my face said “Yea!!!”

She promptly went to get the keys to a performance pack GT in guard and we hopped in. Again I was greeted with the same interior amenities although there was one distinct difference between the ecoboost car, which became very apparent the moment I hit the push button start. The V8 literally burst into life as I fired it up and sent chills down my spine! The aural experience was on a whole other level and it was absolutely epic. Sliding the shifter into first rewarded me with a solid feeling mechanical engagement and the car felt very refined (just as the ecoboost had). Driving this thing was awesome as the V8 had gobs of power everywhere and the short gearing made the car very snappy with any throttle application – absolutely stunning! I found myself just pushing the go-fast pedal so I could hear that glorious motor. I took it on the same drive route that I had with the ecoboost and found that it did everything in a more aggressive manner (very much to my liking); a very beastly machine indeed. I’ve driven some fast cars before and this thing was right up there in terms of power, response, handling, etc. Bottom line, that drive sealed the deal for me. I was going to get the mustang…
And I was going to get the V8.

Bringing us to the present day when I finally pulled the trigger on a Base GT, Black, with the spoiler delete. Now the waiting begins… Can’t wait for the day I take delivery of the stang!

Nice account of your journey. I had a similar experience test driving the ecoboost first and the V8 2nd. Once I tasted those 435 horses there was no turning back! In fact if you have your heart set on the 4 cylinder, test driving the 8 might change your plans!

Speaking of the 8 cylinder, I hear a lot on this forum about how quiet it is. I don't have any other experience with V8 cars to compare but I can tell you that the GT sounded phenomenal to me! Sure it might be quieter than some other V8 cars but its all a matter of perspective. I've never lived with those louder V8's so that S550 GT produced a glorious angry symphony to my ears! For me this was the most significant difference from the ecoboost.

I love reading stuff like this.
I only became interested in the mustang because of the Ecoboost engine. I never really considered driving around in a V8 but have always wanted to.
So I did all the research and convinced myself that an Ecoboost Mustang was what I wanted.
So, I call me dealer and in the end get to placing a deposit. It was not an official order but he wanted the main details. he asked what colour, I replied Blue, he asked me what transmission I replied Manual, he asked what body style and I replied fastback. But then something weird happened, he asked what engine and I went to sat ecoboost but the works v8 came out my mouth! It was like something took control of my senses!
I out the phone down and I was shaking, I had just said V8 to the Ford dealer, WOW!

Hearing you guys talk about the V8 just makes me know I have done the right thing.........I think!

Compared to the last generation, the stock sound of the GT is really quiet for this generation. Even the EcoBoost is quiet. Too quiet for me in fact.

Thanks for the warm welcome every one!

Docprego, you nailed it. I was set on an ecoboost for the longest time but the moment I heard, felt, and experienced the GT it was a done deal for me. I've driven a few V8 cars briefly and that sound always got my blood pumping. So I figured if there's a time to get something like this it's now.

Stevec, I know exactly how you feel. I was super excited the whole time at the dealer but at the same time I was thinking to myself "is this a stupid decision?" haha
As one of my best buddies says, "You only live once!"

Tamadrummer88, as for the sound I agree it's on the non-intrusive side - having ridden in an S197, the sound is much more audible in those vs. the S550. Nothing an exhaust can't fix ;)

I drove a s197 v6 rental once it was good, looked nice but ultimately just a tease. I drove a prototype s197 with a supercharged v8 around the ford Dearborn test track. But I was a boy (23 yo) and barely knew how to push her peddles. She excited me but I didn't know how to push her to full potential. I have sat in a s550 but never fired one up. I refuse to do so. But oh how I have imagined.

My gt premium convertible awaits to be built.

I feel like my previous experience with mustangs and fast cars in general were the equivalent of first and second base. With the prototype I tasted 3rd base. But I will wait for marriage. And when MY mustang arrives I will know what to do and she will blow my mind.

It's possible you may have the volume on your audio system turned up too high :headbonk:;):D
