I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought this. The crazy thing is that most dealers don't even ask if you're insured when you test drive. They ask for your driver's license. What if I went into a dealer but didn't own a car? Isn't the owner of the vehicle responsible for the vehicle, any injuries caused to the public and damage to public property? If they didn't make the OP sign a waiver then I don't see why he's legally responsible for damage.

He doesnt have to sign anything to be legally responsible for damaging their vehicle.
We do 20 test drives a day and not a single signature or proof of insurance.
And if there ever been an issue, we have worked it out with customer and came to a mutual agreement.

You guys can put any kind of spin on this, but the OP was in the wrong and admitted so.
The only thing that he rightfully isnt happy about is the fact that the dealer is trying to make money off of the situation.

Insurance doesnt follow the car. If you drive someone else's car and you wreck it YOUR insurance is involved not who owns the vehicle.

So if it follows the car and not the driver, that means if you total a Hertz vehicle, the car and its owner Hertz should stand for YOU totalling the car and your insurance didnt follow YOU? ;)
You have the option to decline insurance at the Hertz counter, my company provides its own insurance & instructs me (and any other employees traveling with me and sharing the driving) to decline.

But yes, I have driven a lot of rental and corporate vehicles & the insurance follows the car (unless you sign to decline & reduce rental rate slightly). Unfortunately I dented a drivers side quarter panel once, no big deal & I didn't even need to be there or sign anything when the car was returned.

To add on to this, you also sign paperwork while renting you don't do that for a test drive. Completely different set of circumstances

You decline their insurance because you have an existing insurance that follows YOU regardless whos car you're driving.
Insurance follows the driver not car.
When you talk about your work or employers insurance that's totally different. If I total a demo from fhe dealer their insurance covers it cause I work there.
If I total a friends vehicle I HAVE to use MY insurance even though it was his car cause I was the insured driver who totaled the car.

But what is the limit on Comprehension and Collision? I mean, if your insurance company charges you based on the price of your car (e.g.: Ford Focus) but you wreck a friend's Corvette C7, they'll cover the repairs on the Corvette?

If you don't have enough insurance to cover, then the owner's insurance kicks in for uninsured/underinsured to cover the difference.
