I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought this. The crazy thing is that most dealers don't even ask if you're insured when you test drive. They ask for your driver's license. What if I went into a dealer but didn't own a car? Isn't the owner of the vehicle responsible for the vehicle, any injuries caused to the public and damage to public property? If they didn't make the OP sign a waiver then I don't see why he's legally responsible for damage.
He doesnt have to sign anything to be legally responsible for damaging their vehicle.
We do 20 test drives a day and not a single signature or proof of insurance.
And if there ever been an issue, we have worked it out with customer and came to a mutual agreement.
You guys can put any kind of spin on this, but the OP was in the wrong and admitted so.
The only thing that he rightfully isnt happy about is the fact that the dealer is trying to make money off of the situation.
Insurance doesnt follow the car. If you drive someone else's car and you wreck it YOUR insurance is involved not who owns the vehicle.
