Yeah, this is an odd question, I know.

But, out of curiosity, which generation(s) of Mustangs were known for having a respectable amount of interior room - or, even if not respectable, more than the other generations.

I get it, they're really 2+2, but I'm curious as to whether any could seat four adults in semi-reasonable comfort. I realize that the 6th gen (probably 5th gen, too) can only fit kids or maybe small adults in the back seats.

Because these are the sorts of questions that bother me at 3am...

I've never sat in a Mustang with any kind of interior room. And I've owed every generation except for the 2nd, gen.

My '70 Mustang isn't too bad for rear seat room, and the '71-'73 are even better. The headroom in my '70 is really great! ;)

A lot more back seat leg/head room in my 12 and 14 GT's than my 2016.

I'd say the S197s were about as roomy as they got....

I am 6'5 and my knees hit the dash with the seat all the way back in a 2013 GT. I own a 2015 and I don't put the seat as far back as it can go. There is enough room with some to spare in the S550 mustang. The only thing I wish is the seat lowered down like 1 more inch, but overall its fine. I can even ware my helmet in the car with a little room to spare between it and the headliner.

You never sat in a 1971-1973 Mustang, then. The front seat goes back so far I can't reach the pedals. It's the only car I've ever sat in where that happened to me. That includes a 1972 Cadillac my dad owned.

Nope.

But I was thinking more total interior room, as in for four humans.

Right. In my 2016 I can't even get the driver's seat back as far as I would like, because the back of the driver's seat interferes with the front edge of the rear seats. So there is easily 6-8 inches more leg room inside a 1971-73 Mustang in the rear seats. In my '70 I think it's probably 3-4 inches more leg room in the rear than a 2016.

Absolutely not. 6'6" and a bit "husky" and agree with the below. S197 might have the slight edge in head room, but everything below (shoulder, waist/hip/leg foot room) is a no contest, S550 is MUCH larger.

With my helmet on, It hits the headliner. but only slightly.

Forgot to add: back seats LOL.
