  • Ford F-150 tops the large light-duty pickup truck segment and Ford Mustang takes top spot in the sporty midsize car segment in the 2020 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study, which measures problems experienced during the past 12 months by original owners of three-year-old model-year vehicles
  • SYNC 3 a key contributor to improvements for Ford Motor Company, which jumped six spots from last year’s study. Company now tied-for-third among all automakers for dependability
  • At a brand level, Ford climbed five spots to fifth place among non-premium brands; Lincoln jumped three spots to No. 4 among premium brands

Feb. 12, 2020, DEARBORN, Mich. – America’s best-selling truck and the world’s best-selling sports coupe have both received new accolades from customers.

The Ford F-150 and Ford Mustang are J.D. Power’s 2020 Vehicle Dependability Study award recipients for large light duty pickup and sporty midsize car segments, respectively, helping to launch Ford Motor Company into a tie-for-third among all automakers. The SYNC 3 voice-activated communications system – available on all 2017 model year Ford cars, SUVs, light trucks and electrified vehicles – was a significant driver of the company’s six-spot improvement compared to 2019.

“For us, high quality means more than a great experience in the first few months of ownership; it includes a great experience throughout a customer’s ownership journey, and these results affirm our commitment to building high-quality vehicles,” said Linda Cash, Ford vice president of Quality and New Model Launch Program. “This commitment now includes continuous improvements, like over-the-air-updates via WiFi, which keep SYNC 3 systems fresh.”

At a brand level, Ford climbed five spots to fifth place among non-premium brands; Lincoln jumped three spots to No. 4 among premium brands. The two top-five finishes comes after both brands finished top-five in last year’s J.D. Power Initial Quality Study.

Ford F-Series last year capped its 43rd straight year as America’s best-selling pickup truck, while the Ford Mustang was the best-selling sports coupe for the third consecutive year.

A good report I suppose.
Unfortunately, there are likely more Toyota Highlanders sold in the U.S. than all those cars combined (not including F-150).
People don't buy cars.

* No other model in this segment performs at or above segment average

So the mustang was the only car in that segment that actually passed their tests. Low bar, but a win is a win!

It's great to see that Ford is doing well in an actual study with real data. So much of the time online all we see are conjecture and opinion. We tend to have a bit of an echo chamber here with dissatisfied people posting a lot more than those who are happy. It makes sense, but it also makes it hard to know what is really going on versus who is shouting the loudest.

This "award" is a total sham. Any award J.D. Power gives out doesn't mean a hill of beans. Here's why:

My favorite comment on that video was: "Hey 95% of all Chevy's built in the last 10 years are still on the road, the rest actually made it home."
