My understanding is that S on the transmission changes only the transmission functionality, and choosing Sport+, Track, Drag, etc., changes only the engine settings, so I think it's best to use the performance modes in combination with S on the transmission. I could be wrong, though.

To clarify, the mode settings don't change the transmission functionality, just all the other stuff (engine throttle mapping, steering mode, etc.), and the transmission in S only changes the transmission functionality [correction - it also does change some throttle mapping].

Here's a link to the online manual discussing the different non-transmission mode settings:
http://www.fordservicecontent.com/F...&div=f&vFilteringEnabled=False&userMarket=USA

And here is where they discuss the transmission modes:

D in S+ or Track is essentially the same as S in Normal, S+, or Track
S on the transmission changes only the transmission functionality, and choosing Sport+, Track, Drag, etc., changes only the engine settings
There are conflicting opinions again. I know I'll test the hell out of it when I get the car. But maybe there is someone who is 100% sure how it work. I just like knowing how things work.

^ That is totally correct and the best reply in this thread. You get the best driving experience when you select S on the shifter and Sport+ or Track using the toggles.

In my 2018 GT PP1 with automatic and MagneRide

With the shifter in D changing the drive mode from normal to S+ or Track absolutely changes the shifting calibration such that it acts similar to, if not the same, as having the shifter in S. MagneRide settings change with the drive mode.

With the shifter in S I cannot really determine whether normal, S+, or Track modes make any difference to the shifting calibration. MagneRide settings only change by changing drive mode.

I could never figure this all out. Thanks to all for the great info. Now it is time for some real world testing to understand all of this. :)

@DickR - Thank you for that. It makes sense that "basic" Sport mode is quickly accessible from shifter and other modes from button. When I get my horse I'll test it more and report (but it will few months from now).

S+ 100% of the time.

Using paddles 95% of the time. This coupled with a stage two whipple makes for great fun every time I drive it.

I only drive my pony in S and I paddle everywhere. The tranny 6R80 will downshift for you from 3rd. I usually shift down to 2nd and let it take over. Paddles are an "old mans" manual alternative from Heaven! I'll never go back to a manual pony. Toyota Celia was my last manual car from the 90's. See you in the twisty's!

Off topic - Coyote Red do you work at Formosa? I've seen your car heading south towards Port Lavaca a few times when I'm leaving the plant. Nice looking car, btw.

Formosa is a giant mud pit for the contractor's so I doubt I will ever drive the 18' over here. The San Antonio Mustang Club does a lot of hill country fun runs. I will definitely say hello for sure when I see you.

Question, so would you shift it into Sport mode and still be able to use track or sport?

Is it better to have the car is Drive or Sport and use track or sport + (or drag even?)

The "Sport" mode selectable as "S" on shifter "works" only when selecting it from Normal mode. If you switch to Track mode. Then the S on shifter doesn't change anything (except that it holds the gear you chose with paddle shifters).

So.
Switching from "Normal" mode to "S" (Note the "S" on gauge cluster in profile section) will change how gears are changed. More aggressive, higher RPM etc. Additionally it holds the gears you chose via paddle shifters and will not go back to automatic mode on its own, except when RPM would go to low).
Selecting "S" on shifter while using any other mode than "Normal" (Note that no "S" on display in profile section) will not change how car drives. It will only hold the gears you chose via paddle shifters.

I hope it clears it up for you.

sort of does. However if I plan on using the paddle shifters I would want it in S, however I can still leave it In track or sport + also...

Yes. That is the idea. You switch it to Sport+ or track. And then switch your gear to "S" (so that it keeps your gears selected via paddle shifters).

If you're jittery while driving a manual clutch, then you don't know how to drive clutch very well. Same with automatics, but it means you can't feather the throttle right.
