I am having a new set of MPSS tires mounted tomorrow and have an HPDE event next weekend. With normal daily driving I will only put ~ 100 miles on the tires before driving around 400 miles one way to the actual event.

My question is: Can I expect the tires to be at their maximum capability with only 500 miles on them, 400 of those being highway? I can do more driving if needed to further break them in before the HPDE but wanted to know if anyone had some first hand experience tracking MPSS tires with relatively low miles on them.

From what I gather, they possible may be at risk for chunking when that new, depending on your driving style. With a few thousand miles and associated heat cycles I bet they would do fine. Either way, let us know how they work out. I'd certainly be curious to hear.

Tons of guys drive MPSS at autox or track days, so hopefully someone with first-hand experience will chime in.

50 miles of regular driving will break in or remove the transfer layer on the tire (when new). it's broken in then.

I think what Nightmare was suggesting was to have less tread so that you have less chance of MPSS chunking. MPSS is not an extreme summer tire and cannot withstand the heat that a extreme category tire can. So it is been known to chunk sometimes. it also depends on skill, driving style, track surface and track lay out.

If you're a novice, just make sure you keep your tires at below 36 psi hot and you should be fine. Just for reference, 36 psi hot might be under 30 psi cold.

Start at 30 cold and slowly bleed off air. Just keep an eye on the wear and you should be fine.
