The weather is great here, but the smog restrictions really suck. I'd love to do full exhaust starting with headers, but AFAIK there's no way to do so without failing emissions every two years.

So are we stuck with catback only and a tune? I plan on doing an (illegal) intake but that's easy to replace with stock when it comes time to smog. What else can we do to our new cars here in CA?

I just break the law. Won't need a smog for a long time. Sometimes you just gotta say what the hell.

You are aware that here in California, the SMOG II system connects direct to the OBDII data port. The PCM records all of the parameters your car will produce, so it will capture the changes after you mod. So even if you put back the original hardware to pass a visual inspection, you may not pass the OBDII test since your reading will be out of tolerance with what Ford lists them as. You have 5 years before you'll need to smog the Mustang. If you're willing to take the risk, try to find CARB approved parts. You sure don't want want your new car to be reclassified to an every year smog check.

I'm thinking about a tune and CAI also for my 2015 GT, live in the bay area. I moved here from KY in 2008 and at that time I had a 2006 GT with an AirRaid CAI and a SCT XCalibrator tune from Bama.

I had to do 2 smog tests before I traded it. It passed both times and no one at the smog test place ever said anything to me about anything.
(I'm pretty sure the airraid CAI was not CARB approved because when I traded it in they wanted the original intake assembly for the CARB sticker).

Anyway, not sure how it passed but it did ...twice.

But lets say times have changed and it would fail these days.
I know it might be a pain in the butt to have to take off the CAI and put the old one back...just for smog test, but surely if you put the stock tune back before you go in there's not going to be any funny readings from the OBDII port at that time ...right?

I figure I might have to put stock tune back on and re-install CAI at worst.
No other mods planned except maybe axleback exhaust.

....Or I could chance it and do what I did with my 2006...take it in and see if it passes!

The obd2 only stores so many key strokes/ running miles. Back to stock a couple of weeks before the 5 year smog. Don't let a cop do a visual inspection in the event of a noise ticket.
