No kidding ... 5th to 2nd = possible smoked transmission. Best tell him he's driven your Mustang all he's gonna get.

Let the centering spring in the shifter do the work from 2nd to 3rd or from 5th to 4th. Inexperienced manual transmission drivers get a bit nuts with the stick side motion from 2nd to 3rd and hit 5th, or from 5th to 4th and hit 2nd (BAD!).
You can skip from 5th to 2nd if your speed decreases to the point where it's safe to shift into 2nd gear - then I rev match (but you know that already lol)

I wouldn't forgive myself if I did this at higher speeds though

IIRC, the owner's manual says you shouldn't labor the engine during the break-in period, which I take to mean don't do what your friend did. Still, I'm sure he didn't hurt anything. Just don't let him drive your car anymore. :)

"BREAKING-IN
You need to break in new tires for
approximately 300 miles (480
kilometers). During this time, your vehicle
may exhibit some unusual driving
characteristics.
Avoid driving too fast during the first 1000
miles (1600 kilometers). Vary your speed
frequently and change up through the
gears early. Do not labor the engine.
Do not tow during the first 1000 miles
(1600 kilometers)."

Yeah man... I still am thankful that it wasn't a downshift.

What unusual driving characteristics might that be during break-in period?

Yes, but I was talking more along the lines of say you are in 5th gear at pretty high speed, then want to shift down one gear to 4th for a corner, but instead hit 2nd. I've read about guys doing this before, and the end result isn't pretty.

Read this thread ... he was up in speed in 3rd and accidentally went back into 2nd and messed up his car. Just think if you where in 5th at pretty good speed and accidentally went into 2nd! :eyebulge:

Reading this thread from Europe, where even little kids can drive stick in their toy cars is like... just reminds me how different our driving cultures are. Not so long ago I showed my aunt an automatic transmission and she asked why the stick isn't moving itself when changing gears since it's automatic

The gates certainly arent tight. This is one of the sloppiest manuals I've ever had (in pretty much all regards). It is by far the least impressive part of the 11-current Mustangs. I'd much rather have a Tremec in this regard.
What are your reference points? Just curious. The MT82 doesn't feature bolt-action rifle qualities out of the box, but it's far from sloppy. My gearbox still feels an order of magnitudes better than my friend's FoST even after he'd done some work to it (SSK plus bushings). The only stock gearboxes I've had my hands on that felt noticeably better came from Stuttgart.

 I tried to point this out to my wife, the official family "know it all". I was met with "I learned how to drive on a damned manual trans. I know how to shift a damned car,". Me: "So why did you just go from 2nd straight to 5th? Mrs. knowitall" :D
