Mechanical issue with cylinder #8

Took my 2016 5.0 in for a cylinder 8 missfire and they updated the pcm thinking it would fix it but did not. Ended up being a mechanical issue in that said cylinder. Has anyone ever encountered this problem? Dealer is taking the head off to inspect and say they will cover me as long as a ford tech isn't sent out. My car is basically stock besides a JLT cold air intake, injectors, and a flex fuel tune.

The tune might do you in. You should see how many Ecoboost warranties have been denied when Ford discovers the tune :doh: As I understand it, Ford is requiring dealers to dump the PCM memory and send that to Ford as part of the warranty process...good luck!

Hopefully they don't deny my claim. They know it was tuned but said they will cover it as long as the tech doesn't have to come in. Hopefully it's not the tune because he is a very good and reputable tuner across the country from what I've seen and heard. Don't wanna put names out there either as respect for his work. But is is a known issue for that to happen on that cylinder? I was also told by a buddy that they are no longer sending techs out for engine damage. Instead they are just replacing them to get it over with but now sure how accurate that is.

There were #8 cylinder issues in the earlier coyote 5.0's. Hope it's nothing like that.


Could be a factory defect with the tune having nothing to with it. Easy for the dealer to blame the tune in that case though. Would be up to you to prove them wrong if it came down to it. Pretty hard when you've changed the factory parameters via an aftermarket tune.
I wouldn't call injectors/flex tune basically stock :gossip:

Seriously, you're running a different fuel than the vehicle was designed to run on... How can you expect warranty coverage?

That's not what I'm worried about. I'm just asking if it's a known issue or not and what it usually is.

I remember reading about a cylinder #8 issue a few years back, but I thought whatever it was got worked out. This is the first I personally heard of this in quite a while.

My buddy burned up #8 on his 2012, also running a reputable tune. Something about the tune turning off/dulling the knock sensors or something.

Was it a dyno tune as well or an email tune? My car was put on the dyno.

Email tune. As has been said already, this was not an unheard of thing on the older (tuned) Coyotes.

Before they go crazy taking apart the engine there is a problem with the intake manifold runner control breaking in the #8 cylinder causing misfire codes. Does your car run good with just an engine light?

Well the dealer is the one that condemned a mechanical issue. They said they are going to take off the head and inspect it to see what has to be replaced. Car is still under warranty and are willing to help me out since a buddy of mine used to be a service writer and told him to take care of me. A few days prior to this he gave me a free oil change.

Actually the same 5.0 that is in the F150s has the flex fuel tables open in the ECM. The motor can take it. Flex fuel tune just opens the tables up on the S550 ECM along with the tuning.
