Hi everyone,

I've owned my 2019 GT for about 2 years now and one of my first mods I did was change the interior lights with LED's from Diode Dynamics. When I did that, I broke the old map light assembly (not sure how, guessing I pushed one of the lights in too hard or incorrectly) and one of the lights stopped turning on. I had also broken off one of the tabs (as I've read is a common problem). I decided I would buy an unbroken one and got one from a 2016 Mustang used off of E-Bay. I understand that there was a model refresh between the 2017 and 2018 model years but the map light assemblies looked almost identical. I noticed that the plastic molding that held in the plug to the rest of the harness was slightly different but everything else was the same as the map light assembly from the 2019. I installed it almost 1.5 years ago and never had any problems.

Recently, I took in my car to the dealer for a minor service and the tech notified me that the car had thrown a code that points to the map light assembly. I was not told the exact code but I've never had that issue before. Is there a known difference between the 2016 and 2019 map light assemblies that could an issue? If not, would it be best to just keep an eye out for the code? I do have an OBDII reader but haven't had a reason to use it until now. I plan to check that everything is properly connected this weekend, but just wanted to see if anyone had ever encountered this issue before here as I couldn't find anything online.

Thanks.

Wanted to post an update to this issue. I procrastinated handling this issue, and ended up failing a safety inspection because it "failed safety for airbag light staying on". After taking the map light assembly apart again, I compared the used 2016 one I installed with the original 2019 one I had where I broke one of the light bulb sockets. I found that while the map light assemblies themselves are pretty much identical, the airbag light module that is part of the assemblies are different. I missed that the first time being a newbie when I first replaced it 1.5-2 years ago.

The 2016 air bag light module has its plug angled at about 30 degrees and only has an airbag "OFF" light. When I angled it in the sun, I could not see any "ON" light and when I sat in the passenger seat, the airbag off light just turned off.

The 2019 air bag light module has its plug angled 90 degrees and has an airbag "OFF" and "ON" light. You can kind of see it in the photo when I angled it in the light.

I unscrewed the 2019 air bag light module from the 2019 map light assembly and it replaced the module in the 2016 (plug and play, the screws and tab lined up). When I plugged everything back in and sat in the passenger seat, I confirmed that the airbag light went from the "OFF" light to the "ON" light.

I'm going to be taking my Mustang back later this week to get that safety inspection sticker.

So if you ever break the map light assembly, the housings are interchangeable (with the 2016 one being easier to take on and off then the 2019 one), but you will have to transfer the air bag light module over as they are only compatible with their respective sub-generation (2015-2017 vs 2018-2022). Also don't procrastinate problems lol.

Good information and thanks for posting about it too with the images.

There's also another thread about the overhead map light air bag "jewel". I think it's in the interior sub-forum.

Great write up!
Do you have the part number for the 2019 style passenger deactivation lamp?

I am fighting with Ford over this same exact issue. They say there is no replacement airbag indicator part, and that the entire console needs to be replaced, which isn't covered under SRS warranty. $1200

I zoomed in and cropped the image of the 2019 one since the web page seems to have sized the original image weirdly, and do not see any part numbers. I can confirm there were no part numbers on the 2016 one so I don't think they have one. I would say the best bet would be to try and buy a used map light assembly off of eBay. My 2016 one had cost me about $40 2 years ago. I'm not sure what a 2019 would go for right now though, but probably cheaper than $1200.

My best guess as to why Ford doesn't sell it individually is because the map light assemblies tend to break when taking them off (mainly the 2018 onwards, I don't know why, just see a lot of comments about it) where the clips are attached (I broke it on my 2019 map light assembly when I took it off). That's why they might package everything in that assembly as a set so if a tech breaks it taking it off they don't have to worry about since they're replacing the whole unit.

May have found it.

Eastgate Ford's parts portal says this will fit a 2019 Mustang GT. However, another dealer has said this part is for a Ford GT (supercar). Is there anyone from Ford on the board that can confirm?
