Magneride shocks-how to get them out

So I have had them out once before when I did the bushings in the controls arms. I did the springs today and wanted to pull then to get them out of the way. It appears you can get the out going up and you might get the out going down if you pull the mounts, or you disconnect the hub at the bottom-or am I missing something? I never did get them out all the way. I just dropped them down to the floor
