Hello Guys,

Had my Mach 1 for about 300 miles and since I got it from the dealer I noted the steering wheel is harder to turn vs my buddy GT350 not much, about 30% more in all modes, so does the M1 have a “harder” steering?

Also when the car is fully warmed up I can hear a very slight squeak when turning the steering wheel with the car on or off…

So is this normal or should I take it to the dealer?

Thanks!
JC

We are close in mileage, and I do not hear squeaking in the steering. Also I can tell a difference between modes but I haven’t driven a 350 for comparison.

For the noise its very slight you have to have windows up, stereo off for it to hear it…

Ha ha! The last week I noticed a steering wheel squeak when turning to right. I am not sure I can hear it with car off (probably wouldn't turn a wheel), but with car on, when sitting in the parking lot and just turning the wheels it is audible and it is clearly different from the tyre squeak. I thought I might be imagining things (my car is full of strange noises :)), but I guess I am just a lucky guy who received the full experience.

Whether it is normal, I cannot say, I hope not, but I already learnt that Ford has quite a margin for what is "in tolerance", so I guess, I am not drawing any conclusion. I will just have to pay attention and eventually when visiting a dealer about the other noises, bring this one as well.

For the record, I have ~2000 km, and my car was sitting in the shop for the last 4 months .

I never heard any squeaking on my Mach except when going up my little driveway cause it has a bit of an incline. After a little bit of time though I have no noise anymore from it. Never had noise on flat ground though.

Is it pump noise? I’d put the front in the air to rule out tire noise if you want to chase this down. Sometimes a simple extra bleed of the power steering system will sort it out if it is. My buddy’s V6 did this in 1 direction only.
Edit: nothing to bleed in the S550 platform. I thought it was still pump driven even if not belt driven.

I wonder if it could be related the ambient temperature? My car was built in December last year, probably in a cold environment and now I was driving it in hot summer temperatures?

These cars have electronic steering, there is no power steering fluid or pump.

My bad, thought it was just electric pump but still fluid driven. I see now I was wrong.
We only did troubleshooting to identify it was steering and not suspension related for him.

Here is the bare steering column out of a 2015 Mustang and essentially the same as any 2016-current day Mustang.

I found the below images online for display/discussion purposes.

The first image as seen, is how the unit looks installed in the vehicle if looking at it from the engine bay, passenger side. The large black metal encasement is a bearing assembly and that section meets the firewall, with the open ended joint protruding through to the interior and gets secured to the bottom of the interior steering column shaft.

The other end with the small rubber "rag joint" as they call it, is what attaches to the EPAS shaft. That shaft is collapsible as seen because it has to be in the event of a major front impact.

Any binding or noises the driver is feeling or hearing could be attributed to these 2 parts of this column assembly. The joints at each end should be 100% tight and secure into their respective shafts (interior side and exterior side). Binding from suspension components would also create feedback in the column from EPAS.

The S550 Mustang also has an SCCM -
Steering Column Control Module, which is this part (common "clock spring")::

It really shouldn't be causing any noises, but it's another part of the steering assembly.

---

I do know some Fords with EPAS also may have a steering shaft torque sensor that is usually mounted to the column. I am not aware that the S550 has this sensor on the column, maybe internally to EPAS circuitry. Even if that sensor exists in the S550, it shouldn't be making any noises in the interior.
