OK, just to update this after doing a little bit of messing around :
  • If you have turned off keyless entry you need to push the fob buttons to unlock (and lock) the car but the fob still needs to be within the vehicle to start it.
  • Putting your key in a tin wont stop the signal getting out - the car was quite happy to be unlocked with the button / then the key put in the tin / then the tin put in the car / then the car started and driven away.
  • Doing the above with a Halfords faraday pouch stopped the car starting - some message about the key not being present (or similar) was shown on the dash display.
What I don't know :
  • Maybe the tin doesn't bloc the signal as my keys are virtually new ? Maybe as the battery depletes a bit the tin would then work ? Even if it does, that's not much of a margin to rely upon to keep your car safe ...
  • Maybe the Halford faraday pouch will 'wear' given time and lose effectiveness ? Check it every so often to ensure continued protection ?

ihad a faraday pouch due to be unable to deactivate keyless entry in my M2, it stopped being effective after 6-9 months or so. Lots of other people report the same so those who use them need to test every once in a while.

bottom line if it is a concern for anyone just deactivate it and don’t worry about faraday pouches, tins etc. I deactivate mine even though the GT is in my garage.

I truly dislike all this keyless entry. I have never been in a situation where i cannot press a button on the remote. As a result i have fitted my cars with ghost 2 immobilisers so even if they break into my house and take the keys they still cant start it. Its a passive system so cant be detected. For ÂŁ399 the piece of mind is worth it.

I've used faraday pouches for a few years, but now switched to a faraday box. Much butter!
