OK, just to update this after doing a little bit of messing around :

- If you have turned off keyless entry you need to push the fob buttons to unlock (and lock) the car but the fob still needs to be within the vehicle to start it.
- Putting your key in a tin wont stop the signal getting out - the car was quite happy to be unlocked with the button / then the key put in the tin / then the tin put in the car / then the car started and driven away.
- Doing the above with a Halfords faraday pouch stopped the car starting - some message about the key not being present (or similar) was shown on the dash display.
- Maybe the tin doesn't bloc the signal as my keys are virtually new ? Maybe as the battery depletes a bit the tin would then work ? Even if it does, that's not much of a margin to rely upon to keep your car safe ...
- Maybe the Halford faraday pouch will 'wear' given time and lose effectiveness ? Check it every so often to ensure continued protection ?
