Way back at least 10 years ago, before everyone could buy a drone with a camera that could just about fly itself, we called them quad copters. Most required lots of assembly and programming and were a lot more difficult to fly than what you can get know. Almost all were flown just for fun, not to take videos. One of the ones I flew was a Curtis Youngblood Sting Ray 500. For those of you who have never seen one, here's a video for your entertainment. I could not fly like this, but I tried.... and crashed.... a lot!

(The action starts arounf the 4 minute mark.)

Very cool. Just bought one of the almost self flying cameras. The engineering and technology in this stuff is pretty amazing. Back then as well. Crazy to think that video is 11 years old.

Well, don't try any of those stunts with your new toy!

Back in the old days, I always had problems with the type of quads you buy now because it was hard to get 4 motors to behave the same all the time. It seems there was always one that was a little slow or a little fast. The StingRay 500 was a revelation because it had only one motor. It was more of a challenge than the 4 motor variety, but very reliable and consistent.

Technology and software have certainly changed things, now.
