Its a massive problem in the UK right now. Insurance companies wont even insure some cars such as the Land Rover Range Rover if you live in London because thieves can purchase transmitters off of the internet that unlock and start the car via its keyless system.

Everything from Ford Fiestas to Jaguar XJs have been stolen with this method leaving zero trace other than CCTV footage.

Its something the auto makers haven't quite figured out yet.

Part of the problem can be mitigated by moving the key fob further away. I keep my keys in my bedroom on the upper floor of my house.

So i'm pretty sure I know the answer, but if they can amplify the signal and get in, they can certainly hit the push start button and drive off? Even if you drive out of range of the amplified FOB?.....and of course if they stall or turn off the car it isn't going to start again....browsing Amazon right now.....

I don't think you can drive car for more than 10 or 20 meters, correct me if I'm wrong. Don't know for sure how much meters you can drive (or if you can drive).

Btw, can someone pinpoint what to search on ebay? My future father-in-law has Focus ST 2013, and we are curious to get that item to test on his car :headbang: ...i'm thinking he will get a pouch soon :D

Excellent thread

My previous cars with keyfobs like this - once started you could drive them until you ran out of fuel with no keyfob in the car. They were showing a reminded "No keyfob found", but drove just fine.

Ok, so if that's the same with our S550's then this really is troubling. Even though getting it broken into would be a bad situation, if they could drive it without the FOB to a chop shop or just one single insane joy ride would be disastrous!

they can probably start the car and drive away. this is the only info i can find in the OM

Fast Restart
The fast restart feature allows you to
restart the engine within 20 seconds of
switching it off, even if a valid key is not
present.
Within 20 seconds of switching the engine
off, press the brake pedal (automatic
transmission) or clutch pedal (manual
transmission) and press the button. After
20 seconds have expired, you can no
longer restart the engine without the key
present inside your vehicle.
Once the engine has started, it remains
running until you press the button, even if
the system does not detect a valid key. If
you open and close a door while the engine
is running, the system searches for a valid
key. You cannot restart the engine if the
system does not

Can the proximity unlock not be turned off? I thought I read somewhere you can disable the keyless entry.

so what, you'll have to enter by removing that piece on the driver's door handle every time?

No just press the button on the keys.......

Surely the signal booster only boosts the continual signal from the key which unlocks when you touch the handle. So by deactivating that they can't boost the signal.

You just press unlock on the key when you want in the car. Or am I totally missing something

Lol sometimes technology advances mean you forget what used to be normal.

In my e90 I moved my OBD port because thieves were breaking the window and plugging in and programming a new key and driving off. So my plan for keyless entry is to disable it ASAP and just point and unlock with the key.

Anything to make theft harder is always a bonus!!

I live in glen burnie
You towards 695 or in the southern part? Some of those northern areas are pretty sketchy. Use to go up there all the time to Marley Station and A.L. Gators. Grew up in Anne Arundel/PG county.

There was another EB on here that had it's wheels stolen and I think that was in the Baltimore area also.

Have you had your car in for servicing anywhere? Oil change? Garage for anything? You'd be surprised how many people will copy your keys and things like that or find out where you live if you have things of interest from them.

Also if you are POSITIVE that no one had access to your car and it was locked, you should contact Ford and let them know that there could be something going on with the security of it.

So here's a simple question, have you asked the police to ask the guy how he got into your car? This is important for your safety and peace of mind. Make the police find out that answer for you.
