Wouldn't be an issue with a drop-in style filter (aFE, for example), as the air has to make that turn no matter what, but the cross section it has to make that turn in is much larger.
True, but with this intake the air has to be pulled through the opening where the filter attaches vs the stock intake where the panel filter itself is the whole surface area where the air is being pulled from.

Exactly. Thus a possible reason why he's seeing lower lbm readings after switching.

Excuse my ignorance guys, what do these lbm reading represent exactly?
Total mass of air being pulled through the intake. More is better. "lbm" = "pound-mass".

Could the car be going through a "learning" stage and eventually re adjust? I 've heard some people say to disconnect the battery when installing a cai on these cars. What does that do exactly, and is it necessary? Curious as I am also ready to pull the trigger on one of these closed box systems.

Good question. I reloaded my Roush tune to give it a chance to relearn the short term and long term fuel tables. I drove it around for awhile throughout the rpm range before I did a couple log runs. I have some good data for Lund support now so I hope that can tweak the tune for this INJEN setup.

I agree I like the intake tube, but I dislike the way the filter gets attached and creates an unessary 90 degree turn.

Here is a good picture of what you are talking about:

Interesting observation today with this intake. To do a proper datalog, you can't use E85 on the flex fuel tune. You need to run 91/93 octane gas. I have a full tank of E85 that I need to run out. So I'm driving around today in 4th gear +4k rpms AND jabbed the throttle and something caught my eye on the factory, digital vac/boost gauge in the dash. With the closed air box of the INJEN, I'M MAKING BOOST :headbang::headbang::hail::hail::lol:. What's happening is that the box is getting stuffed with air but the throttle body blade is holding it back. As soon as you floor it, that stored air goes through! This was at 50-60mph. I'm seeing a max of 2.0lbs of boost for a second then the air box is depressurized by the engine. My Roush could never do this because there was no trapped space being an open box top. Still funny. Might help in a roll race:ninja::D

Speaking of boost--would this intake work with a velossatech big mouth? Is the snorkel opening the stock shape and in (roughly) the stock location?

That velossatech big mouth would work just fine. But I would hold off on any purchases right now. Preliminary testing and data logging done by me is showing this intake is not flowing as much (maf reading) as the Roush. Greg from Lund is working on my tune at the moment. I'm taking it to the track this Friday night if the weather holds up.

Very interesting findings. Can't wait to see how it does at the track.

Higher intake pressure but with lower velocity. The pressure increase is probably from the bottleneck created by separating the filter chamber/inlet from the rest of the intake with a wall.

MAF is all that matters at the end of the day.

Update...

Been working on a tune with Greg at Lund for the past couple days. All I can say now is WOW!!!:headbang:

Part throttle response is much improved. Seems to recover after each gear change much better now. As for the much anticipated maf #s....they now meet and exceed the Roush! At 7200 rpm, the Roush was at 42 in lbm per min, INJEN is at 44.4. On course for a Friday track visit.

Hmmm...makes me wonder what these would do on a stock tune.
