Well, this may possibly be the next step in trying to fix my issue of multiple misfires. See my thread Off Idle Hesitation.

New plugs - 6510’s at 28 and no real change with mode 6 misfires. So as others have said, change the coils.

Any recommendations for new ignition coils? Date on door is 3/16 so according to Ford, it falls into the “late 16-17 bracket”.

What are most people using for coils? Staying stock? Any real benefit to an aftermarket coil? I see there is a Ford Performance coil but I believe it requires changing the connector? Are they worth it or is this a case of just going new stock coils?

Thanks!

People run the stock coils on 1000+hp builds. I don't see a reason to go aftermarket. Nor do I see this fixing your issue.

Yea, I’m skeptical as well. I hate just throwing parts at it without knowing the exact issue. I’d love to try out a set to see but don’t know anyone willing to let me swap them out for a try. Cheapest I’ve found up here for a set of stock coils is $600. Kind of pricey for a shot in the dark. I’ve switched coils cylinder to cycle dee and didn’t change anything. Still no cels so the car doesn’t feel there’s an issue but I see it in mode 6 data.

I ran into a misfire issue, and it drove me crazy for MONTHS. I replaced coils, injectors, EVAP control valve, plugs and found a couple issue that sorted it out. Mine needed a crank relearn and that helped with most of it. I also found that my car didn't like the amount of ethanol that was in fuel. I got a great tuner and shop involved and finally got things smoothed out. (I used all OEM parts)

Thanks. What was the verdict as to the cause?

Thanks.

For me it was cumulative. Coils and plugs helped since I had 3 bad coils, but it still ran rough. crank relearn fixed a lot of that but then it ran rough cold and when I had a full tank of gas. replaced the purge control valve and that fixed the rest. Sometimes it'll run a little rough again, so I'll put a little additive in the gas. For some reason, with a 93-octane tune, it just doesn't like the amount of ethanol. Figured out the ethanol thing on accident. Went on a road trip and ran across a gas station that had ethanol free fuel and the car ran much better on it.

Thanks. How did you know you had 3 bad coils? I just tried checking resistance with a multimeter between 1&2 and they tested the same. Likely not definitive though.

I managed to find a shop that deals with Mustangs almost exclusively and they were local. Was having the digital cluster installed and they told me there were three cylinders showing misfires. Just to be sure, I replaced all the coils including the plugs.

Check compression, leak down and borescope looking for slight ring land damage?

Did the compression test and borescope. Just did #1 scope again as well. Looks great and no concerns. Compression was great all around. Consistent. Can’t remember numbers - posted on my other thread. But no concerns that way. Did not do leak down test as compression showed fine and don’t have the right set up to do it.

Appears stock coils are the way to go, if I go that route. I switched 1&2 just now to see if anything changes. (Worst and best for misfires lol).

I'm here as much as I can. I'm in the Houston area and kind of got smashed by a hurricane. My car ran smoother but still had some issues. I found a performance shop that had a dyno and a tuner in house. Left my car with them for almost a month for tuning and repairs. My major issue was cam phasers, so I had a lot of work done including new headers and cats and a re-tune. Car runs amazing now. Better than it ever has. I would recommend finding a performance shop with a in-house tuner to see what they can find.

I ended up later taking my car to somebody more local to me. The shop I mentioned above was just too far to drive. I now take it to HPC (High Performance Connection) and they did a GREAT job re-tuning my car. runs GREAT.
