In the trunk. The flat black plastic thing that is hanging down. What is this?

It is an internal safety boot release (trunk as called in the USA). To be sure, as the Irish say, close the boot, open one of the back seats and tug on the latch and observe what happens. You can also have the trunk open and tug on the latch and again observe what happens.

Im refering to the flat black piece that is hanging down at an angle. Not the release cable. There is another one like it on the passenger side but it is snapped into the sheet metal above.

In the photo, on one end of the piece in question, there are two, small woven belts.

I'm guessing this catch has something to do with a child seat latch or catch/tie down. An anchor point. Or it attaches to or is involved in an anchor point for a children's seat. One on each side of the rear seat?

This is my guess, too.

Where is this in the trunk? Deck lid? Package tray? Near the seats? Maybe a zoomed out pic would help.

It should be snapped up in place next to the emergency release cable. I have this pic from mine and it seems to be emitting or reflecting light for sometihing.

It is the tension strap for the convertible top, one on each side. Easier to snap back into place if the top is lowered a few inches. There are tabs which snap into oblong holes in the deck which break. The tension will keep them in place with the top up but when you lower it they fall out. Conveniently, there are small holes in the clips which line up with round holes in the deck. I just used a screw (barely long enough) and washer on each side to hold it in place.
