I enjoy driving my GT350 (already spent $350K racing a Mustang)

I own a 2019 GT350. It's fast.

I've already raced a Mustang. It will cost $110+ per lap to race a mid-pack old in an old car. The tow truck and trailer are expensive. The license is expensive as well as the entry fees. We will need two sets of tires every weekend. It's on you to pay for it.

It's not like I didn't get plenty of trophy's. This is exiling T-1 at Road Atlanta when the car rotated perfectly to the right side grip.

Fair Warning: It's fun but expensive.

How many smiles per dollar do you estimate that is?

I agree.

Raced with SCCA and then pro with IMSA/SPORTSCAR/ back to IMSA in the nineties. I spent way more than that and I hear ya. I would do it all again.
I am just saying that the old days were all good. I am also saying that racing a modern GT350 with options is a $100,000 car to start. Then another $15.,000 per event.

Heck, I had a really old car 1965 Mustang (not a new GT350) that I never worried about destroying the car in one turn. You need that to race fast in the next turns.

I spent $25,000 to buy the race car. I spent $350,000 to race it. I sold it for $25,000

Today that is $100,000+ to buy and modify it, It's $700,000+ to race it. It's worth $30,000 to sell it.

I am just saying today's inflation costs.

Yep - speeds costs...... how fast do you want to go? I did the SCCA W2W thing back in the '90s and switched to parking lot autocrosses and then the early days of track days and time trials as they became more available in the 2000s.

I'm guessing the cost and commitment (let alone the capital expenditures) is why track-days are so popular. From the garage queen that gets driven to the track once a year for an event to the mild-to-wild modded cars that get trailered to the track regularly for their workout, track days give lots of guys the "Walter Mitty" experience and tons of time on-track.

I like big fast with a bunch of other cars at HSR Sebring 15 years ago. This was a 3-Hour Enduro:

It's 70 cars going full speed for 3 hours. Watch out for those fast guys up front (I qualified in the rear). Balls on fire for three hours (two 5 minute pit stops required). I was really worried. I got 2nd in class.

The winner got a $5 trophy.

You guys can see the older 1967 Camaro in the above race. He had a very fast engine.

Bad stuff can happen. The car went off track due at VIR due to brake failure: It can happen to you.

Racing is not a place for a guy on a budget. One bad thing and your car is toast and you end up in the local hospital.

Street race in Dallas where I bashed up my front clip. In my last race at Sebring I broke two noses and had to borrow one from another team. My team always said I was hard on the equipment. Ha! Yeah, it gets really expensive when you break things.

With time trials/attacks and hill climbs becoming more popular and available the need to go racing seems less and less necessary unless you really want it.

You can stay "street modified" class in SCCA and have pretty darn near close to a race car experience at a fraction of the cost of road racing. Plus you can get a novice license in time trial and hill climb without all the hassle of a true road racing SCCA Novice license. If you have enough HPDE experience and track day experience you can get the license.

My car is slowly developing into a time attack specific car that's still street legal for the occasional weekend rips and track days.

Best of both worlds for those of us that are lucky enough to have a second car or two but don't have deep enough pockets for full blown racing.

Is the goal of the thread to find an excuse not to drive your GT350 on the track ?

I bought a Boss 302S recently for wheel to wheel racing, and use the 350R for TT and casual/ fun track days only now.

The difference between a factory built race car and converted street car are enormous. Serviceability, lack of clutter, simplicity etc. Looking back, I probably would’ve left the R stock and started with a dedicated race car. Too late now!

Hey Spencer - Any chance that's 0014? I was looking at one of those just last Spring and it was serial ending 0014. Had just a few hours on the clock and would have been a great buy.

This is 018. It raced the 25 hours of Thunderhill and has a NASA ST2 regional championship in it's history. Very nicely kept, lots of updates from the original configuration, and came with plenty of spares.
