How to remove solid dowel pins from transmission casing

Does anyone have first hand knowledge of how to successfully remove solid dowel pins from aluminum casings Without causing any damage to the dowel or casing? I need to remove two of them from my transmission cover. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Okay, I figured it out everyone. I used a heat gun, a soft dead blow hammer and a drift to knock them out. No damage was done to the dowels or casing.

I just went through this on my trans .... I let it sit overnight with pb blaster then used a punch from the back side

Okay, breaking my own rules here by replying to an old thread. But, missed it the first time around.
Glad that the backside was open and you were able to drift it out. Usually I am not that lucky and am dealing with a blind hole.
A few years ago I came across a pretty useful tool. It is a vice-grip slide hammer by Las Vegas Tool. It is easy to use and works well for this kind of job.
And, no idea why the picture looks like a jigsaw puzzle...
