Just wondering if anyone has recommendations on home security cameras.
My wife's car was broken into overnight in our driveway, this is the second time in a couple of years to have this happen so it's time to get some cameras up.
I would need night vision, motion activated and a great picture. I'm thinking video would be better than still photos, but not sure.

Only security system you need is an AR-15 and ammo.

No but seriously, Costco has some nice deals on really good setups ranging form a variety of different capabilities. Lorex is a good well known brand. I've been looking at a setup myself. We have stand your ground and the castle law here in WV, so I've just been waiting on someone to come on in.

Check into ring video doorbell.... i use it to keep am eye on my car while im at work or away...It can pick up motion or go off if someone rings it. Best 200 dollars ive spent in a while.

If the motion detector goes off it sends a notification to your phone. You then can view it live. It streams right to your phone. You can listen and even speak through it. its great to get UPS to leave packages that need signed for and to scare off cats, dogs or thieves.

Easy to set up l, has a rechargeable battery that last me months before recharge or you can hard wire it so you never have to charge it.

It uses a cloud service for 30 dollats a year to store all the video. You can playback all video from the cloud. Plus if its stolen and you file a police report they will replace the unit free of charge. They have only had 4 stolen ever.... they have proprietary screws to mount it.

Just my 2 cents. Works great, got mine at best buy

1. Install cameras in your car, use a sticker
2. Home: Costco, use signs and stickers
3. Buy a gard dog
good price and easy to install

100% agreed on the AR, but if I don't know they're breaking into my car it doesn't really help me or act as a deterrent.
I should add, I'd like something simple as well. I've used Arlo for other purposes in the past but the batteries just don't last long enough and replacing them every 2 weeks just doesn't appeal to me.

I'm sure it's not a bad idea, however if you are not conspicuous on where you are mounting the camera this may lead to someone completely destroying the camera(s) and then be on their way to what they were going to do/steal. It may also alert them to just wear a ski mask as well. Just my .02 .

Almost sounds premeditated if you're just waiting to kill someone on your property, eh?

Also, shooting an AR-15 in your house will make you deaf as fuck, I'm getting tinnitus just thinking about that.

Not really. There are a few kinds of people that I hate in this world, and thieves are one of them. You've pretty much signed your own death warrant by committing a home invasion. Let's just say I wouldn't mind getting a stateside kill giving the circumstances.

A 5.56? It will be loud no doubt, not enough to make you deaf. Unless you shot it next to your eardrum over and over until the mag was empty lol. Your ears will be ringing for a while though.

I have a 16 channel qsee, and it's been a really good system. I put 5 1 terabyte hard drives in it so it records for about 30 days in 1080 with sound at both doors.

Did you do all of the wiring yourself? I dont have a lot of space to run the wiring in my attic.

If you don't want to run wiring, then there are kits that support Wi-Fi cameras with batteries for power. Although I've heard the battery life is usually 3-6 months, so you will find yourself changing batteries often.

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is the way to go with surveillance cameras IMO. One line to run, and it's hard wired for data traffic.

Yea it wasn't hard. This system is getting old, and I am going to do a new one in the next year or so. The new systems are all cat5 for the cables.

I ended up using my Arlo system for now, completely wireless. Each camera uses 4 A123 batteries, and frankly the battery performance is awful, think weeks and not months, but the video is HD and they offer free cloud storage for 7 days worth of vids.
It's the short term solution while I look for the right long term solution.
Comp, do you know the name of the system you're referring to? 3-6 months on a battery is 10X what I'm getting currently.

Honestly I can't remember man and don't want to direct you to the wrong one. It may have been on Amazon. I remember it said 6 months in the description for the battery time, but some people in the reviews were saying realistically 3-6.

I remember each camera also had it's own SD Card, so if your WiFi goes down, it still captures recordings and saves to the SD.

For home security system, mavlon tech is the best choice as I have been using it effectively for the past 2 years without any issues.
