so im looking at the vmp gen3, whipple gen 5 or the edlebrock for my 2016. the vmp kit comes with the biggest available heat exchanger. with the whipple you can upgrade the heat exchanger or fans but not both..not sure why, and i dont see any options on the edlebrock. so if you went whipple would you get the bigger heat exchanger or the fans? are the intercoolers that much more efficent on the whipple and edlebrock that you can run a smaller heat exchanger? i live is sw florida its hot all the time so im just looking for peoples opinions/options

The Whipple gen5 with the upgraded heat exchanger (double in size) works very well. Also use 2-3 bottles of the Red Line water wetter with it. Upgrading is a definite Yes, from me.

The fans won’t fit on the big whipple HE. There’s not enough room for both.

According to Whipple, most people go with the big HE instead of the fans. The fans are noisy and once the car is moving at a reasonable speed, they actually impede the flow of air. While sitting still, I am sure they are effective, though.

You don't want fans on your heat exchanger

The Whipple overside HE is a good option(def get it if you order a Whipple, don't bother with fans), the VMP is not that large of a heat exchanger either, half of it is covered by the impact bar and it's only 2" thick, while it does a good job it's not the best out there.

The Edelbrock unit is has 2" end tanks with a 1.5" core and has contact with airflow coming from the bottom and top grilles. I'm currently testing a prototype larger unit for it(pictured below)

We are in SE Florida and understand your concern for cooling! Our 18 has a gen5 Whipple with the oversized heat exchanger. With no modifications to the cooling side of the kit, we saw 135° iat at the end of a 9.0 @ 152 run. We ended up throwing an ice box on the car and ran 8s.
We have a lot of information regarding cooling here:

Thanks again for that info Kona18, your a treasure for pertinent data. I guessed at some of what those test indicated but it's much less effective than I thought and more obstructive once moving.
I knew those would be issues just surprised the severity. I went thru a lot several years ago with core thickness vs area vs rows vs airflow with engine overheating issues on swaps....same basic principals hold here....if that's Edelbrock stage 2 cooling I expect one in the mail today when you read this ( as my car is already torn down perfect timel), if not put me down on the list if the maker needs a certain amount to commit before they make a batch mark me as plus 1....
Thanks

I had the fans on mine here in Texas, and they really didn't do much. I'll do the over sized one next time as it is really effective.

Really good info aside from actually getting a running engine back in cooling is something I wanted to address before spring!!!
