Headrest tilted too far forward?

I would agree its further forward than it should be, but for me the bigger issue is that it's so friggin hard. I notice is less after some wear, but it's definitely not soft enough.

Yes, I know that, it has several positions that click into place and can be reset to the rear by tilting all the way forward and releasing to tilt back... I am saying that even in the most rearward back position, that setting is still too far forward for us.

I am attaching a photo that will hopefully explain.

I have reversed the drivers headrest backwards; it does not touch my head unless I slightly lean back, which feels comfortable if I do so (except for the coat hanger hook in the headrest). The headrest is there, but not intrusive or uncomfortable.

The passenger headrest is in the original stock position and set at the rearmost tilt setting. You can see its base is set a couple of inches forward of the seat back and would contact the passenger's head about 4" forward of where the driver's reversed headrest does, and also will hold the passenger's head at a chin-lower angle to their body. In addition note that the passenger seat is tilted farther back than the driver's side seat is; if it was straightened up to the same angle as the driver's seat it would push the passenger's head even more forward / chin down. FWIW, the headrest tilt settings will click 10-12 times more forward than in the photo and at that angle would jam my chin completely down against my chest if I was sitting in the passenger seat... I have no idea who would use that angle setting. If this is normal to everyone else then I suppose I will accept that I am the one who is abbynormal

It would be great to be able to figure out some way to take the 10-12 tilt settings and rotate the whole shebang back a few clicks.... I think I could live with the rearmost setting being a few clicks further to the rear.

I think [MENTION=21294]GJarrett[/MENTION] is spot on, and I completely agree. I have my seat leaned back to that sweet spot so that I can have bend in my elbows at 12:00 on the wheel, and to aid seeing out from under the rear view mirror (which I have flipped upside down to get it higher). It is probably about like your passenger seat angle.

Even so, my headrest is either all the way back, or maybe one click forward. I cannot fathom anyone using the click positions that are SO far forward as to put your chin on your chest. Noticed this right after getting the car.

I pull the headrest, and stick it back in backwards for track days. But that defeats its purpose for safety.

Ideally, I believe the current position (all the way back) should really be its mid position. It could still ratchet forward, but also ratchet back for use with a helmet.

Someone should start a DIY thread on how to improve the situation.

OP, did you really disassemble the internal mechanism in such a way as to flip the headrest around, but maintain the original ratcheting function?

I totally agree wit the OP on this one. Not as much of a problem for me, but my girlfriend cannot ride in the car with her hair pulled back in any way. Absolutely a bad setup. Unfortunately all Fords/Lincolns with the newer style seats over the last few years have this same weird angle to the headrest tilt. Customers sometimes complain and we tilt the seat back more to help fix the angle.

Cheap (and probably ideal) solution: Take the cover off the headrest and remove some foam.

... That or find a seating position with the seat reclined a bit more. That's the main difference between y'all and the rest of us. Most people sit with more recline angle in their seat back.

The headrest is a safety device, you're not going to like how that backward headrest feels if you get rear-ended and actually have to use it. Its going to both hurt and also not support your neck at all. Otherwise I'd say just remove the thing.

it almost looks like a 90 degree angle. WAY too inclined.

OP sitting too straight up.
And yes, everyone is different. You could be having longer legs than torso so your seat is further back but your arms are having issues touching the steering wheel so you sit more straight up.
Try pull the steering wheel out a bit and recline a bit.
