Santa Monica Parking Enforcement will cite your car for no front plate even if its parked legally on a city street.First, they're custom plates from https://www.platecreator.com made with the California Flag and state code in lieu of the EU symbol/country code and have the same plate number as my actual plates.
The short answer is that they are not. Per California code, I will need to display the state-issued plates on the front and rear.
The long answer... I do not have my state registration paperwork yet and technically I do not need to have plates on the car for 6 months after purchase (also known as the "Steve Jobs Loophole"). When I do get my paperwork, I will put the state-issued plates on the rear and the EU-style plate I will keep on hand for shows and photo shoots only. I will continue to use the euro-style plate on the front as I have for the past 7 years and 4 vehicles. The front plate in California is so rarely enforced (similar to tint on the front-side windows) that many people take it as an accepted risk (and by and large most locales won't bother you for it if you follow the universal "don't be a dick" policy)![]()
