GT350 vs. Z/28

Why is it so imperative to go to OHC? Is there some European influenced ban on big cube engines headed to the US thanks to the EPA and their load of commi bullsh*t? They're getting 450hp 450tq and meeting emissions(for now) out of the NA LT1. I'm not sure what the crisis is.

The point of sticking with cam in block is that it allows for big cubes in a small package. GM would not be able to build a 6.2L DOHC engine in the same compact and relatively light package . Neither could Ford, or I think they would have done it by now.

If GM goes DOHC they will move to smaller cube engine in roughly the same overall dimensions. The only difference from a driving perspective would be the type of power delivery, cam in block-high torque right off idle. DOHC-high rpm screamer.

I don't think there would be any real difference in performance if GM were to go to DOHC. Camaro and Mustang are very close in performance atm. When Camaro is losing at a model level, it is not because of the engine in the car, it is because of the car surrounding the engine.

There would be no need for "big cubes" with DOHC AND, they wouldn't have trouble with emissions. The OHV is what makes both VCT and AFM nearly mandatory on the LT1.

Then why can't they outperform the Mustang? Seriously though, I don't see any reason not to, but Chevy somewhat doesn't do it.

As I said earlier because of the car around it. 5th gen was an overweight pig.

Where did they have trouble with meeting emissions? I know they did with their attempt at an LS7 replacement. But did they have trouble on the LT1? It's 2 sides of the same coin really. You say "There would be no need for "big cubes" with DOHC" and GM says there would be no need for "4 cams" with "Big Cube Cam in Block".

How does the AFM work? You shut down 4 cylinders in high gears and low rpms when you're cruising at 65+? Does it matter? Or is the opposition to it that it's just added complexity and more potential problems? And didn't the manual Camaro get to ditch it anyway?

DI has been troublesome in the past and may be a problem for them now for all I know. But it is coming to Ford quicker than DOHC V8s are going to GM IMO.

Zeta chasis was the biggest problem. The LS3 in the corvette is awesome. The LS3 in the 3900lb SS is still a fun ride but the 3600lb GT with the 5.0 had its number. You switch engines into the same car I bet the results are relatively the same. The GT(LS3) would still beat the SS(5.0) because its obese lol.

It's alpha now. The new car should weigh less, how much is up for debate. Bottom line is it WILL be within 100lbs of the GT. It is likely that straight line performance will be an edge to the Camaro. I know this is a function of more than just the engine but if OHV were such a problem you'd think it wouldn't be close. At the entry V8 level the Camaro's performance will not be a problem. It's problem's are PRICE and possibly not differentiating it'd appearance from the 5th gen. I doubt they will have the sales success of the Mustang in the US because of these 2 issues. Having stuck with OHV is at the bottom of the list of problems for GM.

No... someone has already posted the LL article on the board here, and the GT350/R weren't in the field. Next year we'll have it/them plus the GT4.

Very good read, how Multimatic readied the Boss in 700 miles of testing... Edit: the trip took 700 miles.

I think they said the GT350 had 3 times the testing the GT500/Boss 302 had.

Did they say developed along side the z28? How's that? 2014 was the z28's development year and the OEM z28 had already been out :lol:

That's the way it's done but typically you would start in the class and actually be developed together... and being closer in equipment then we have seen recently.
