The GT-R uses a hydraulic pump for steering assist. The only production car that could've been considered "fully electric", a.k.a. steer-by-wire, was the Infiniti Q50. Funny thing is, they're possibly ditching the system which took ages to develop.

Car enthusiasts usually prefer hydraulically assisted racks for their natural weighting characteristics. Electronic power steering assist has been going through a long battle of fine tuning since its implementation years ago. There are multiple different versions of EPS and some of them have the potential to be nearly as good as a hydraulic power unit.

There was a good article on the subject... gotta find it.

In waiting for the M2, I opted out of the M235i and instead ordered my 135is... and glad I did. Other than it's horrendous steering ratio, its feedback, center and feel is superb. Crazy difference between it and the M235.

It looks like Ford Performance is taking an aggressive stab at EPS. I think the are pushing it and am excited to see the differences between BMW and Ford. As I will get to compare them myself & decide. Great times!

I have not driven the new M3/4 and I think the M2 will have to play into that, as the M2 is a more track focused and purposeful M. But I don't think Ford is that far behind. I keep watching those recent Focus RS videos and watching those engineers faces...

Not knocking on BMW here, I have driven a M235 I and while impressed that it was lightweight and effortless, it wasn't quite there... yet. And if the M3/4, etc has improved upon that gen, then I know we are getting close & I don't think Ford Motor Company is that far behind, given how aggressive Ford Performance is being in racing.

That said^, I do not think the GT350 uses anything different in steering, than a GT. Hmm..

Software no doubt will be different.

And for anyone thinking they could get the GT350 software put into their regular GT's, that's something we've been waiting for since 2011 and yet there is still no software flash for EPAS.
