Would importing a LHD GT350 Heritage Edition be a street legal option in the UK?

It can be done, there’s the cost of the car plus the shipping, insurance and import duty which from memory is 10%, then VAT at 20% is added to the total.

Then there’s a type of approval, it used to be known as SVA (single vehicle approval) but the name has changed now and I’m a bit out of touch, basically you’ll have to change things like headlights, indicators, marker lights and the like to comply with European standards, because the Mustang is already Euro compliant all the parts are readily available but won’t be cheap from the Ford dealer.

Once you have your VAT clearance and SVA certificate or whatever it’s called now you can apply to the DVLA for registration, as it’s a grey import they’ll issue the oldest possible plate for the year you’re registering the car in, so even if you did it late in 2020 you’d still get a ‘69’ plate.

After all this the car would owe you in £ what the car cost in $ but since the Brexit turmoil the pound is weaker than it has been historically so you’re probably looking at 120% of the $ price in £ by the time you’re on the road.

I haven’t done this for many years so I’m open to correction if I’ve got anything wrong.

VAT was introduced as our contribution to the EU but they’ll never do away with it, it generates £billions for the treasury, they’d go bankrupt without it.

VAT is just an EU wide sales tax framework. It replaced Purchase Tax that we had before we joined the EU.

There will always be some form of sales tax, the only thing leaving the EU will mean is greater flexibility on how it is applied - which could obviously be a good or bad thing !
