There is a bracket on the inside of each head pipe after the cats that has a round weight or vibration dampener attached. I circled the part in red in the schematic below. What is the purpose of this item?

Just what you said, vibration dampener.

Yup, vibration dampener because of the FPC. I highly suggest checking to make sure it's on there nice and tight. Mine almost fell off and was rattling like crazy. I threw some red loctite on there, tightened it, and it's been fine ever since.

Same thing happened to me. I was glad it was an easy fix though.

18+ vibration dampeners are fixed, not bolted on. I wonder if this was because they were working themselves loose on the early models.

Thanks for the info. I figured it was a vibration dampener based on it's placement and configuration, but wasn't 100%. These engines must create some intense harmonics to require Ford to put a dampener on the exhaust head pipe. I've never seen that done before. I wonder what happens if you remove them? (Not that I ever would).
