GT 95 Vs 98 RON

What are peoples thoughts on this?

My first two tanks I used 95 RON, for the first time today ive filled with 98.

I cant comment yet if theres any perceptible power difference, but I will say (and I dont thinks its placebo) that it seems much, much smoother - especially on cold idle and slowish city driving (when coming on/off the throttle).

What are peoples personal experiences?

It certainly doesnt drive badly on 95, but I need to figure out if the 98 is worth it to me..... has anyone noticed a difference in MPG figures?

98 will be better for the engine. I'm not sure it is a placebo. I have always used She'll V power or Tesco Momemtum

Shell V Power here in NL is actually 95RON with additives. :(

I used Esso Super98 today as there is a station reasonably close by.

Im only 10km from Germany, where 100RON is available, but I honestly cant be arsed to drive over just for fuel.

There was a noticeable difference between the two on my diesel X-Type so I'm damn sure I won't be using the cheap stuff in a 5-litre V8!

I doubt there's much in the way of power to be gained but you may notice a difference in MPG. The question is, do the extra miles outweigh the extra cost?

Even the cheap stuff isnt cheap here in NL. :frusty:

95 is €1.45 per L
98 is €1.60 per L (at the moment)

So a tank of 98 is costing me approx €8.50 per tank more. I think on that basis ill stick with 98 from now on where I can. Ill be doing approx 1500km per month (or 4 to 5 tanks), although in these first 6 days ive done over 1000km! LOL. A 10% improvement in fuel economy would mean it pays for itself, which at the moment would mean going from 21 to 23mpg.

Ill experiment and see where it takes me

I know we used to get, for a very short while and in about 12 locations in the entire country, 102, which was almost double the price of the next best thing. :lol:

That would be enough for me.

Mine's had one single tank of regular fuel which is when the dealer took me to a station to fill up for the first time and the place was heaving so didn't really have a choice of pump.

It's since done almost 5K miles on the good stuff and if 31mpg over 186 miles back from Spa is anything to go by, that's ALL it will be getting!

I've got shares in Shell so when the fuel is cheap, I'm losing money on the shares; when the shares go up I have to pay more at the pump. I can't win! :lol:

Car will adapt itself to whatever you put in it over time (except diesel, don't do that.....)

It's designed to run on US fuel which is 92 RON I believe?

Only used Shell V-Power so far

Switched back and forth between Shell 95, Vpower Nitro & Momentum, no discernible difference in power or mpg. Being turbocharged petrol you'd expect it to perform better on super as well. Vpower is £120.9 and Regular £109.9, super is a bit rich for me now.
Best MPG on a run was 37.5mpg and that was on Regular

That's^ the issue.

The measurable differences are so small as to make it almost impossible to tell under "real-world" driving.

I used to religiously only use VPower in any of my performance cars then the week before getting the mustang I stumbled on a 30min video documentary about lower grade v high grade and it totally changed my mind so now I just use 95 and am happy with the cash saving.

Unless your running a turbo charged car and racing the life out of it then really there's no point in the extra anti knock abilities of the octain

It takes 2-3 tanks for the ecm to adapt to better fuel and start advancing spark for more power.
