The real question is... Did anyone check their engine oil levels when the car had less than 20 miles on it... then check it again at 250, 500, 1000 miles?

The first time I checked it was today at 300 miles, it is exactly half full when cold... its so perfectly at the half way mark I think that is the way they filled it from the factory.

Unless others have checked theirs cold when brand new to verify?

It also says not to add oil unless it is below the low mark.

I tracked this all the way from new to my first oil change in my journal post.

Thanks, that info is helpful! I am doing much more accelerating and engine braking than you, so perhaps that is why I have a bit more consumption.

Your oil analysis is comforting also!

Thanks

I checked my oil at 140 miles and it was right on the full mark. At 500 miles it was down maybe a millimeter on the stick, which I calcuate to be only about 2 oz of oil if the stick represents 1.0 qt between the low and full marks. I have not been babying the car either ... get on it quite a bit.

So I thought that I was half a quart low.... checked it again today when it had been sitting for 2 days and it is reading full.

Be careful with your measurements!

300 miles 1/2 full
650 miles 3/8 full

either consumption rate has slowed or from the factory they didn't fill it up...

Anyone else? Share your results so I can stop worrying :headbonk:

Do you have a PCV catch-can on your car to collect oil being sucked out the PCV system? If so, has it collected any considerable amount?

My oil level only went down about 1 mm on the stick in 800 miles, which is only about 1.5 oz based on the hash marks on the dipstick - and I've been driving it kind of hard now and then. This calculates out to around a quart every 22,000 miles. Not sure if it will stay at that rate as time goes ... will see. I monitor my oil level like a hawk!

I changed to Mobil One at 1K; at that point oil usage was nearly nil. Now at 3.2K, the oil level is right to the top of the hash mark with the oil temperature barely warm and the car dead level, still nil. The oil looked almost as clear as new. I often drive the car hard, too.

It's very important to have the car absolutely level. For kicks, before getting it level, I checked it on my sloping-up-a-bit driveway, and it showed as being over-full.

Also, the JLT catch can had only about a tablespoon or less of oil in it. Still glad it didn't go into the intake.

mine was full from the factory after I drove it home. 1200 miles now and its maybe 1/8" below full on the dipstick. Im guessing thats probably like a 1/4 of a quart. My JLT had about a tablespoon or two as well
