I think people like big vehicles because they feel safe. You are up above traffic. The other cars seem smaller compared to your big vehicle. If an accident happens it's relatively much farther away from you.

Plus, I think a big vehicle is like an extension of you. It makes you feel larger and more important. Some of the same reasons people buy a luxury car or a Mustang/Camaro. I know when I drive around in my 1999 F250 SD I feel awesome - especially when I have the plow mounted and a bunch of extra weight in the bed. ;)

What always gets me is that we keep making these laws that make large vehicles more expensive and harder to get, and then many people still buy the big vehicles.

That's understandable. However would something like a Ford Escape/Edge or Chevy Equinox work just as good rather than something like an Expedition or Suburban? They get better gas mileage as well. Hell, My wife and I managed to fit a queen size mattress that we bought into the back of her Equinox just recently so she could drive it to her parent's place and drop it off. Now, there wasn't much room for anything else, but we made it fit. :D

I get that there's a lot more room and it's always nice to have more room. But I still think a lot of people buy more vehicle than they need.

For example... I'd love one of the new F250s. I have absolutely no reason to own one other than I like how it looks and would be able to throw crap in the back whenever I needed to. But I wouldn't need it to haul a trailer any time soon. So I guess I'm in that same boat in a way. But to me a Truck offers more value than an SUV. That's just my opinion though. I hate throwing mulch and other garden stuff in the back seat of my Versa. haha
Trucks are an incredibly useful vehicle.

I have a M1009 CUCV and I kinda of want to get into a newer truck. I am doing alot of house revisions and the K5 has a fair amount of room. But not enough, I found my self borrowing my buddies Ram a few times.

I have even contemplated consolidating everything including the Mustang and getting a Raptor. Until the new Ram, and GM twins comes out there is nothing close new F150.

But that Cucv is a hard vehicle to replace, but the need to separate cargo and personnel area is growing. But there is a huge trend in our customers get our of the sedan realm and push CUV/SUVs.

Yeah, I agree that truck are way more important than SUV's. Having decent passenger space and being able to throw stuff on the back...what else do you want?

Hauling bikes, wood, furniture, tools, or whatever.

I would love to have a Focus or Fiesta as a DD, but they refuse to build a 3 door version because my shoulder hits the B pillar and is slightly painful and bugs the heck out of me.

We almost bought my wife an Escape, but the B pillar and lack of space to move around a little on long trips meant we ended up with an Edge. Love the Edge for trips, I don't feel like I'm in a sardine can like her old Matrix.

Right now I'm driving my 2001 F150 Supercab 4x4 as DD, sucks on gas but I only drive 25 miles round trip to work. As soon as the Edge is paid off I'll have my Mustang to alternate with.

Recently bought a Mazda CX-5 for my wife. Nice car(or station wagon i like to think) that has a decent amount of room. My wife told me the saleswoman mentioned the wide seats. I figure that is for big American asses.
Maybe that's why Americans like bigger vehicles.

Why do Americans want bigger vehicles? So they can fit more crap.

When I lived in Germany, somehow families with a couple kids managed to drive around just fine in a VW Golf. Here, you have ONE KID and all of a sudden you need a minivan or a full-size SUV. It's kind of hilarious...
Could not agree more... Being raised with a sister by immigrant parents, I remember noticing that our cars were smaller than most of my friends (not that as a kid, I noticed any correlation between that fact and being the child of immigrants), but we were just fine for it. The biggest car we ever had was a Ford Taurus (and Mercury Sable), and they comfortably carried the whole family along with a friend (or two), and all our picnic gear.

I mean if you're regularly making ski trips up the mountains, sure, buy an SUV. For most people, it just makes no sense. I think a lot of people do it because they feel safer in a bigger car, too.

I have a 1998 Mercury Villager van for large purchases or I borrow neighbors Tundra, my GT is a grocery getter, and 24-25 MPG on the Hwy, I commute 3 days a week 80 miles mostly Hwy twists an turns are fun.
