The idea came about in April 1986 after Jim Moylan, an interior trim designer at Ford, struggled to find the fuel cap on a company vehicle he was driving. After a thorough soaking while trying to pump gas on the wrong side of the car in the rain, he drafted a design for the fuel gauge arrow and submitted it to his boss.
Oh, come on, give me a break... "Struggled" to find the fuel cap... You look on one side; if it isn't there then it's on the other side. How can you "struggle" to find it?
Soaking while trying to pump gas on the wrong side? Really? :cwl:
Sometimes I forget that my car has the flap on the left side, after having had it on the right for over twenty years. But it takes just a few seconds to realize my mistake and to go back in the car and move to the next pump. What does "trying to pump gas on the wrong side" mean? Did he just stand there for minutes, looking bewildered at the flapless side of the car? :cwl:

If my 1st car would of had a fuel door arrow, it would have to point to the rear of the car. The fuel cap was behind the license plate.
16 years old and I am allowed to buy a 1st car with a 7.4 liter.
This is what it looked like (not mine, but same colors/wheels/interior)

It didn't matter which side the pump was relative to the car.

Same for 67 Mustang (hence the now classic fuel cap)...

I never paid much attention to the small arrow by the fuel icon until my son pointed it out to my wife after she rented a car. Another issue I encountered was picking up a new Transit cargo van at the Ford dealership. The salesman told me to immediately go to the nearest gas station and put gas in it. I walked around several times, opening each door until I was about to leave... the filler tube is located within the driver's side door.

Sadly, I've seen people do just that.

I bought a Pontiac fiero once. I could see where the fuel door was but took about a hour to figure out how to open it. Couldn’t find the lever or button or anything. If you are sitting in the drivers seat the lever to open the fuel door is behind your head to the left.
