I've owned a 991.1 C4S and a 991.1 GTS, never a GT3 but have driven one on several occasions. I was entertaining a .1 GT3 but in the end, I went with my GT350R. If you go over to rennlist, other GT3 owners have indicated that they prefer their GT350R. In my opinion, the 991.1 GT3 is not twice as good as the GT350R.

Now, the one that would really make me stop and think is the 991.2 GT3 Touring. The 4.0 is an amazing motor and in my opinion, second to none. That motor paired up with their silky smooth and well geared manual transmission is really something to behold. Plus, the GT3 touring will hold its value better than any other modern Porsche GT car imo - it's basically an updated 911R. I asked a couple of dealerships about GT3 Touring allocations and they all laughed. They can get me a new .2 GT3RS allocation, but not one for the touring. If you're looking at cost of ownership and factor in depreciation, the GT3 Touring is likely cheaper than the R to own.

As for warranty, in my experience, Porsche has been the best out of every car I've owned. The 991.1 GT3s had finger follower issues that blew up engines - their response was a transferable 10 year 120k miles warranty on those cars. I've gone as far as taking my cars in for creaks and rattles - all covered under warranty.

So short answer is no, keep the R if the alternative is a 991.1 GT3. If you can swing the Touring and can get an allocation, I'd go that route. Or get a 997.2 GT3RS :D

Good feedback. Part of me is torn - I have always wanted a GT3. I had a 997.1 non-GT3 before the 350R. Obviously the 350R blows it away. With the 991.1 GT3's coming down in price steadily it is getting more intriguing since they have the 10 year 120K warranty. I love the look of them - more than the touring package and that is outside my budget. Agreed on service - Porsche is a class act. I also know depreciation on the 350R will continue to drop - especially with a replacement engine which mine has. You could drive a .1 GT3 for 2 years and I bet you would not lose that much $$.

I'm assuming he's talking about the massive jump in performance from the 997.2 to 991.1.

The 997.2 gt3 and RS are similar performing cars to the gt350s. The 991.1 chassis was the big jump.
That would make more sense as a 991.1 GT3 on the track in the right hands is quite a car.

I just drove my GT350 halfway across country on a 1,000 mile road trip with my wife and daughter and luggage (entire trunk and half of rear passenger seat full of stuff) with temperatures sometimes in 30s in elevations very high (pennsylvania mountains) roads so harsh with ice, salt, 18 wheelers that reduce visibility to 10 feet during pouring rain (second leg of the trip it rained 5.5 hours out of 6.5 hours non stop). And I have done this while car inspired full confidence, it is incredible. Yes I have snow tires (michelin alpine PA4 285 square). Even in those conditions, the speeds at which the car is able to handle the road, turns, and braking is just amazing. I recently had the (dis)pleasure of driving a ford explorer limited during the time when gt350 was in service and my god do I feel bad for people who drive an SUV everyday. The corners that gt350 takes doing 60 mph has to be entered doing 20 mph to have the same body roll and confidence level (which obviously you cant in highway so you end up feeling very uncomfortable in it).

And I have done this trip while enjoying a 8250 rpm redline and sound that literally rumbles trailers.

There does not exist another car on the planet that can do the same and have the same characteristics. This is a car you can truly daily drive AND raise a family with it.

Porsche does not compare when it comes to utility. Its a USELESS car as far as carrying ANYTHING let alone passengers. I have fit so much stuff in the GT350 that unloading took 25 minutes (including carrying them to the house but you get the point).

I have 35,109 miles in my car in 25 months of ownership and I love it. I will hand over the keys to my daughter when I grow old so she can drive and keep it in the family.

I have carried 4x4 timber in it, 10’ pvc pipes in it, topsoil, grass seeds, you name it. This trip in the middle of the winter is yet another accomplishment for the car and it keeps putting a smile on my face everyday.

So I visited my local Porsche dealer today. I think it made me love my R more. I like window shopping cars every year or so, and this was a good rainy day for it.

No, the lava orange GT3 was a used 2016 with about 3000 miles. We didn’t really get to price but it didn’t sound like there was an excessive markup on it. However we did talk about a new Red GT3 Touring model and he said something about a 60K ADM mark up on that (which I completely questioned... but apparently they are rare and in demand), and the real star was a Chalk GT2 RS for about $350K (that was fun to see).

Some nice eye candy there. The GT3 Touring is where it’s at. A base GT350 as the ADM. crazy.
