Fob and Engine On

Just curious:

If I have the engine on and I step out of the car with the key fob in my pocket, and someone enters my car and puts the gear into D what happens? Or what if they press on the gas pedal even in Park?

But when I enter without the key in my pocket, it says it can't locate the key. I just never placed it in drive or pressed on the gas pedal.

But that sucks. I thought there would be a security feature.

I haven't tested this on the Mustang yet, but I suspect what others have said may be correct. In fact, you can even restart the car without the key for a few seconds after you turn it off.

For comparison, my 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe would shut off when the clutch was engaged if the key was out of range. Now I'll have to test this out (although I have the Enhanced Security Package, so it may function differently than other S550s).

I've tested this. I started my car with my key in my pocket and then gave it to my friend standing on the sidewalk. I put it in gear, and drove off as He stood there Holding my keys. My car gave me the no key detected screen so I thought it would stall at some point! I guess not.

I've honestly always wondered the same thing, but just been too lazy to start a thread to ask others. I would have thought that I wouldn't have been able to go from Park without the key.

Wouldnt the car be locked, even when started from a distance, until you physically walk up and touch the handle with the key on you or press the un lock button?

just tap the top of the door handle to lock the car when you get out. that's what i do if i ever have to do a quick ATM run and the car hasn't fully warmed up yet.

How far was your friend from the car?

He was a couple feet. I didn't think I'd get very far since the interior sensor for the key literally only works when the key is inside the car. I made it all the way down his street and nothing happend.

you can lock the car while the engine is running. what really gets annoying is the 10 honks though lol
