I know that others have posted about this topic before. However, I just picked up one of the 1/10 scale Vaterra S550 Mustangs. The car comes ready to run, save for the need to charge the battery. The chassis is 4WD, so that part isn't scale, but it seems to be a very good behaving chassis, if a bit quick, for someone new into RC. Or, in my case, someone that's been away from it for 20 years. Here's the car out of the box:

I had two minor complaints initially:

1) the included charger is wicked slow, as it trickles in .1 AH. Charging takes 9 hours, but I didn't expect that it would include a fancy peak charger at that price point. I have since ordered a better charger.

2) while the paintwork is actually very well done, the decals look (to me) like they were applied by an impatient kid. I toyed, briefly, with the idea of peeling the offending ones up with a heat gun and reapplying them (since replacement decals aren't available separately). This has since become a non-issue, for reasons that will become clear.

The car has a 15-turn brushed motor, which some will tell you needs immediate upgrading. If you are used to fast RC race cars, fine. For me, as I said, its pretty quick and easily finds itself bouncing off of more solid objects. I've been driving it on the parking lot at work and in the warehouse & machine shop. On the concrete floor, it'll do 4-wheel donuts and drift like nobody's business. On the asphalt, less so, but can still slide a bit if you're unwary. A few shots after the first drive:

I am slowly getting the hang of the steering and throttle sensitivity, and the whole it steers opposite when coming at you thing. In the meantime, the car is starting to look like it was used in a Steve McQueen film. I rolled it yesterday when my buddy didn't get out of the way fast enough and it went over his foot. As such, the condition of the decals doesn't bother me anymore. I figure that I can pretty easily replace the body once I'm more confident with driving it. Maybe get the clear version and paint it Guard.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share. It'll be a while yet, unfortunately, before the real thing is in the budget due to various reasons. In the meantime, I'll live vicariously by way of this and my '99 GT...

Nice job with the composition of those pictures and using scale to make the car appear larger than it really is. I had to do a few double takes to really grasp the scale, but very clever.

Nice! I'm waiting for Protoform and/or HPI Racing to make a racier version of the S550 body to use on my 1/10th scale electric TC.

The Vaterra S550 only comes in dark metallic blue. You can, however, buy the body set and paint it any color you'd like. As far as I've been able to determine, it seems to be price controlled - all sellers that I've found (including the local hobby shop) sell it for $250 for the RTR car, complete with everything including batteries. I wound up ordering it from Horizon Hobbies.

FWIW, Vaterra uses the same chassis for several different RTR models, just by changing the body. The one I really wanted (sorry) was the '69 F-100, but its been backordered for a while. When the body becomes available, I'll probably buy one.

One other note - if you already have a 200mm touring car chassis, you can buy the body alone, prepainted or clear. The car has a 254mm wheelbase, if my measurement was good, so that should be doable by a lot of different chassis.

Rick,

Are these totally upgradable such as the Tamiya, Team Associated and Kyosho - where any component can be changed?

I know some RTR box kits are assembled as is and cannot be modified very easily.

I used to have Tamiya products - been out of the loop prob for 15yrs after selling everything off and getting out of hobby. I have never heard of the brand that makes the above Mustang - but really cool!!

Thx for the replies and further info, gonna look into it.

Even though these are RTR, the car has a fully hobby shop-grade chassis. There are a lot of replacement and upgrade parts available. I've got a couple (also older) Tamiya cars, and I'd say that this is generally pretty comparable from what I've seen so far.

Lot of cool upgrades for them too. The brushless motor would make that thing scream. 55mph in one of the other models with that motor.

Thanks. Not bad, considering they're from a cell phone camera - I can get the lens closer to the ground than I can with the Cannon.
