I know that others have posted about this topic before. However, I just picked up one of the 1/10 scale Vaterra S550 Mustangs. The car comes ready to run, save for the need to charge the battery. The chassis is 4WD, so that part isn't scale, but it seems to be a very good behaving chassis, if a bit quick, for someone new into RC. Or, in my case, someone that's been away from it for 20 years. Here's the car out of the box:
I had two minor complaints initially:
1) the included charger is wicked slow, as it trickles in .1 AH. Charging takes 9 hours, but I didn't expect that it would include a fancy peak charger at that price point. I have since ordered a better charger.
2) while the paintwork is actually very well done, the decals look (to me) like they were applied by an impatient kid. I toyed, briefly, with the idea of peeling the offending ones up with a heat gun and reapplying them (since replacement decals aren't available separately). This has since become a non-issue, for reasons that will become clear.
The car has a 15-turn brushed motor, which some will tell you needs immediate upgrading. If you are used to fast RC race cars, fine. For me, as I said, its pretty quick and easily finds itself bouncing off of more solid objects. I've been driving it on the parking lot at work and in the warehouse & machine shop. On the concrete floor, it'll do 4-wheel donuts and drift like nobody's business. On the asphalt, less so, but can still slide a bit if you're unwary. A few shots after the first drive:
I am slowly getting the hang of the steering and throttle sensitivity, and the whole it steers opposite when coming at you thing. In the meantime, the car is starting to look like it was used in a Steve McQueen film. I rolled it yesterday when my buddy didn't get out of the way fast enough and it went over his foot. As such, the condition of the decals doesn't bother me anymore. I figure that I can pretty easily replace the body once I'm more confident with driving it. Maybe get the clear version and paint it Guard.
Anyway, I just thought I'd share. It'll be a while yet, unfortunately, before the real thing is in the budget due to various reasons. In the meantime, I'll live vicariously by way of this and my '99 GT...
