Ferrari People Here?

I have an acquaintance who has owned a number of Ferraris and currently has two. He also owns several Porsches, so his budget is far above yours or mine. But, we still talk a lot about cars. His experience is pretty much what you have observed. It doesn't bother him, it would scare the crap out of me. In any event here are some observations I have:

1. Ferraris hold their value and often appreciate.
2. Finding a good garage to work on a Ferrari is huge, but difficult to accomplish.
3. There are several older models that won't break the bank. Dinos are relatively cheap and maintenance costs aren't awful. Mondials are cheap because they are slow and ugly.

That being said, buy a Porsche. They are far more reliable and much cheaper to maintain. Find a nice 991.1 or 991.2 S, GTS or turbo (if you can afford it). I sold my 997.2S because of some concerns over that model year. But, the models I mentioned should be good.

You won't find the performance and driving dynamics to be dramatically different.

Maybe. I’ve had a Porsche before, albeit many years ago. Didn’t do anything for me. But the Ferrari... been my dream car since I was a kid...

Likely not a rational idea though. The more I read it seems like Biggus Dickus’ statement holds a lot of water - don’t buy a Ferrari unless you can afford 2 Ferraris.

Performance and dynamics aren't everything. There's also the x-factor. A great car must have something special, something you can feel even though you can't put your finger on it, something that tickles your soul, that makes you feel as if you were in heaven and nothing else in the world mattered. Ferraris (well, most of them anyway) have that. Lamborghinis have it. Porsches don't; they are just tools. Perfectly made, efficient, reliable tools - but tools nonetheless. Ferraris are much more than that; they are works of art.

Or to put it another way - Angela Merkel may be able to cook and to iron shirts just as well (or even better) as Charlize Theron; she would cost less to live with and would never cheat on you. But let's be honest, which of them would you like to be in bed with?

I'd say if you can afford a Ferrari (well, two Ferraris), then definitely go for it. You only live once.

So....I have a close buddy that went through the same dilemma and after talking to a bunch of owners went a completely different route....he bought an NSX....

He has titanium exhaust and a tune on his....and now has close to 10k trouble free miles....many NSX guys he knows have much more than that with tires being the only real expense....

Sure it doesn't have the name....but after driving both on track prior to purchase he didn't feel like the Ferrari was twice the car as it cost twice the money

I’m positive the Porsche and NSX can run the times and make the same moves as the Ferrari. I’m sure they exquisitely made and likely even better thought out for conveniences. But to me anyways, they don’t have the “IT” factor. Beautiful to look at, but still missing that little something.
This post is interesting in seeing what people “cross shop” in a way. No one really cross shops the mustang with Ferraris. But I’ve seen mentioned Lambos (makes sense), Porsches (which I can see to a degree) but the NSX caught me off guard. I’m sure someone will say the GTR at some point. But the Japanese brands will never have the soul or heritage the Italians have and to me would always feel like I settled. I’ve have many Japanese cars and still have one, but they are simply transportation. To me anyways, the GTR and NSX are also simply that. Extremely nice and fast modes of transportation. The Ferrari and Lamborghini heritage and quirks of you may are all about emotion. They exude that. The Japanese for as great as they are, have none.
My current mustang, I love. It has the it factor and emotion. Not merely transportation but shows another purpose. But nothing makes the mind race like Charlize... er Ferrari.
