Never broken a bone in my life, much less been injured remotely even close to this extent. Happened on Oct 17th during a motocross ride, the section I crashed at had a 1 to 2 foot tall divider berm to split it into two lanes on a moderate turn. I got up against the berm sitting too strait up rather than leaning against it to slingshot off properly. The front tire caught traction, got dragged over the berm, then my bike did a violent left/right swab and chucked me in the air. I landed real hard on my left side, broke the collarbone, severely bruised my waist and hip, I thought I broke some part of my hip too initially but x-rays didn’t show anything wrong. Oh and cracked a rib right under my left armpit. Got the collarbone plated the following Friday Oct 23rd, they put two plates in and looks like 10 or 11 screws.

By the second week post op, I had 95% range of motion back in my arm, and most of the surgery pain disappeared. The doctor told me told me no weight bearing with the shoulder for 8 weeks. Well I had no choice but to go back to work on pools last Friday and today, I just couldn’t afford to take off anymore time. Zero weight bearing on my left arm and shoulder is pretty much impossible but if I keep it at something like 20lbs of force or less, am I alright? How much support are the plates and screws giving the bone as is right now? So far it hasn’t really bothered me during work, I still have a tiny tiny amount of soreness in general but I suppose there’s still some muscle and tissue that’s healing.

I have another post op appointment for Dec 3rd to see if the bone is fuzing back together. Cant wait to get back on the bike tho. Not much damage was done to it, just the bar mounts are bent, possibly the handlebar too but can’t tell for sure yet. I’ve been riding for a couple of years and always tried my best to to be safe, but I learned the hard way it’s bound to happen, just the nature of the sport.

Sorry to hear about accident, hope you are well soon.

I have only broken my right wrist , happened during flag football when I was in jr. high school, somebody blind sided me from behind.

As far as the collar bone goes just ask current quarterback for the Bears, Nick Foles, I believe he has broken his twice, lol.

Being an owner of a pool just wondering what you job is in relation to them.

Cleaning and chemical adjustments, so a lot of upper body strength is used often. Luckily it’s the time of the year where most of our clients have closed down by now and the routes are about half what it would normally be compared to the summer, so I can take my time.

Good luck with that, looks similar to when I broke mine. Age 40 in the middle of a mountain bike race and fell at the top of a hill. Didn't get mine plated so I have a lump where the pieces fused back together.

You should check in to getting disability insurance coverage for yourself. As a self-employed person that can be a lifesaver. The premiums typically aren't too bad either, depending upon the options you select.

Yeah I really should’ve looked into that a while ago. Luckily my boss lady is an angel, and wrote me a few 1k checks to carry me through the 5 weeks I was out.

Similar to me, over the bars of my MTB coming up to approx thirty years ago. Three pieces for me, it had a floating splinter in the middle. No plating, just a figure of 8 bandage and some pills.

Still got a big lump, enough for the guy doing my bike fit about four years ago to ask when I did it just by him looking at me with a cycle jersey on.

@ the OP - No long term effects, so ā€˜crack on with it’ for want of some English slang :like:

The big question, did you hear it break ... ?

Agreed. Getting the right policy is important while your health risks are not documented (medical records). This keeps the premium low. Most insurance companies request a review of your primary care medical records as part of their risk assessment for certain age groups. Hypertension, diabetes, tobacco use, and obesity are not disqualifying conditions in and of themselves, but they can potentially increase your premium compared to an individual with good health.

All the best to the OP and a speedy recovery. :like:

Cheapest health insurance I got has a 7k deductible, but at least it saved me from a near 30k operation. But yeah, I’ll def look into a short term disability in case this happens again. At 33 I don’t have much of a medical history.
