Exhaust Advice needed

Drone you feel, not just hear. It is uncomfortable. If you're hearing the sound of the exhaust all around you, you're getting some sort of resonance. A well-engineered exhaust will have sound distinctly coming from behind you. If you want truly quiet on the highway, Corsa is where it's at. No louder than stock at constant speed (to me quieter actually), and even when you give it a little gas going up a hill it's just barely there. It comes alive when you downshift and get on it, though.

yeah, I think it is resonance... It feels like it surrounding me... I can still pinpoint noise coming from the back of the car, but also around me....any adjustment to throttle and it gets louder... I had it on cruise on my way to and from Chicago and any little fluctuation in gradient of the highway had the throttle adjusting and I could hear the "boom" as I like to call it... It's disheartening when you watch the install videos (CJPony) and the test drives afterward you really don't get a feel for the interior cabin noise being that loud or having a large resonance...Always advertising zero drone at highway speeds and quiet cabin.... maybe something is still going on with mine that is not right.. that is what I am trying to determine.. just don't want to be switching exhausts brands.multiple times to get it right..(sounds like an expensive hobby).....

I recommend you put in the Borla front muffler (=resonator). It is a direct swap with your X-pipe, so no cutting. It will reduce the volume by 6db (=half). And it will reduce drone, because that's what front mufflers do.

I plan to do the same with my system, bc the fiance wants it quieter for upcoming vacation, when we will have the back seats folded down. But I can swap the X-pipe back in after we return.

Note that I had my system with the Borla front muffler before I bought the X-pipe, so yes I have experienced both variations.

The Borla resonator from the touring catback is not the same size as the stock resonator, it's much shorter. it's definitely not a direct bolt in.

Not sure if the one they sell separately is different, but the one in the catback is much shorter than the stock one...

I was told by borla that this is NOT the same resonator that comes with the touring model... it is specifically designed for replacement of the x pipe on the S series...and that my exhaust would not sound exactly like touring when done...

Gotcha, knew it had to be different.

I can tell you that I have the touring catback. I ran it with the stock resonator and with the Borla resonator. it sounds almost the exact same. Slightly tamed with the stock resonator. but still loud in the cabin while cruising above 2k.

I'm amazed at how similar it sounds with the stock resonator. Pretty loud still.

Yeah if it's at all boomy, you're in bad shape. That's drone/resonance. Muffler design has the most contribution to drone. Your typical resonators can reduce the amplitude but usually never eliminate it, unless they're designed specifically for the application. The only systems that really are drone free have Helmholtz/quarter wave resonators built into them to cancel the frequencies that produce the boomy resonance. The downside is that sometimes this reduces how muscley/deep they sound at low RPM.

I know that I can barely hear my current exhaust on the highway, and I've experienced the opposite where it was always there and always boomy. It's remarkable when you finally experience a zero drone exhaust. You can't even try to make it drone. Any engine speed, any gear, no drone.

The Borla claims 100% drone free, but I can tell you that the "resonance" with their mufflers is there, always above 2k RPM. We can label how we want, but it's always there, in your damn ear.

The problem is, different people have different tolerances to the resonance, so one guy thinks its drone free, where another is going crazy with his fingers in his ears.

I wish I had a local car with the corsa so I could hear it in person. I'd really lilke to hear it in person before spending that kind of cash...

Yes either the full Sport catback or the Touring axleback (which is part of the Sport catback, minus the double X-pipe). The Touring axleback will be one of the mildest options available for the S550, on par for volume with a resonator delete with stock mufflers, but a much, much better sound overall (deeper, crisper).

I wish they would be more firm about what Drone Free means vs actual cabin noise and how much of the exhaust note you are hearing when at highway speeds... all the resellers say.. put it in 6th gear at 2k rmp and it
"all goes away" ... that's BS... if i would have known what I was getting I would have kept looking and possibly settled on the Corsa.

I recommend the Corsa Touring, being that its uses the Sport muffler it carries with it the same pedigree Corsa sound just tamed down some as [MENTION=10281]BmacIL[/MENTION] points out.
Plus as you mention if you decide you want more volume you've got an h-pipe waiting in the wings....:cheers:.

Well we know that the Borla is audible above 2k so that's BS.

But again, some guys think open headers aren't that loud, lol
