After washing my AEM dry filter only once, I noticed a lot of the red coating on the media washing off. The filter is basically ruined, even though I used very mild soap and warm water.

So, I decided to switch back to disposable paper type filters. I found the Ecogard brand on Amazon and Walmart. They are a bit less expensive than the Motorcraft. Has anyone tried these?..... Any good?

I always use OEM air filters and oil filters, for proper filtration. And nowadays, they're not that expensive, compared to after-market alternatives. I live in the dusty desert, so filtration is very important here. And contrary to what some believe, OEM filters flow perfectly fine, allowing all the air your engine needs, so it's stupid to get a crappy (for street use) cotton gauze racing filter which filters for crap. Or other 'high flow' filters. There's no free lunch: If a filter allows more air (that your engine doesn't need), it also allows more dirt. But to each his own, of course :).

Well, not that it matters, but the Ecogard does say it's made to OEM spec. Also I counted the pleats, and the Ecogard seems to have about 10 more pleats of media for filtration. I'm not sure if that's a big deal though.
